Mexico celebrates its independence from Spain, which is actually the 16th of September. It commemorates the Mexican army’s 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican war. Cinco de Mayo has been celebrated across the United States and Mexico, but more in the United States with the traditions of parades, mariachi music performers and street festivals. On the other hand, Cinco de Mayo has come to symbolize a day of cultural pride for people of Mexican descent in the United States and beyond. The Mexican in California are said to be the first to celebrate Cinco de Mayo.
In Hispanic countries, Semana Santa is the equivalent of our Holy Week in the United States. Semana Santa is a week long celebration before Easter. Throughout my career I have received many medals including those from the MSTCA coaches invitational held at the wrentham fair grounds. Participating at invitationals like this or competing at districts and dvc has meant the world to me. I have also received numerous plaques and achievements during my later years at the athletic banquets including most improved, rookie of the year and the coaches award. As my Sutton cross country season comes to an end each day I look forward to the possibility of participating on the bryant team. Indoor and outdoor track may be similar to some but to me they are as different as soccer and basketball.
