India has a great history of retailing. The evidences of ornaments, designer apparels, foot wares and other daily ware items were first found sold during Mohenjo-Daro and Harappa civilization. Though, ancient period offered diversity exist in food and clothing habits in India, the climatic conditions were dominated the retailing scenario in India. In medieval times, the customers were found more commanding than earlier. The customers in medieval India were found to be worthy of setting the rules of marketing (Premchand, 1986). Indian Life style goods were always in demand in India and abroad. The organized retail in the last few years has made an impression appearance in Metros, cities and towns across Indian as seen in sprawling shopping centers, Multi stored malls and huge complexes that offer shopping experience, entertainment and food all under one roof. Several well known corporate houses, such as Tata’s, RPG, the Rahejas, Biyani’s Future Group, Reliance, Bharti and Birla’s have entered the Indian retail arena.
The evolution of retailing in India can be traced back to the village Haats and small town Markets. The rural retail industry could be categorized into two formats: Weekly Haats and Village Melas, Primarily, Weekly formats catered to the daily necessities of villagers. Village Melas were larger in size with a wide variety of goods sold from food, clothing, cosmetics and small consumer durables. With the emergence of the larger towns and cities, the neighborhood kirana stores, which cater to the convenience to the Indian consumers, became popular. A Departmental store has several departments such as clothing, personal care and cosmetics, books and stationeries, house ware goods, electronics etc, all under a single roof, although individually functioning as a Strategic Business Unit (SBU). They offer considerable customer service. These store are large in size (or area) more often owned by large or national chains. For instance, Life Style, Shopper’s Stop, Pantaloon etc comes under this category. iii) Category Killers or Category Specialist:
Specialty stores are called category killers. Category killers are specialized in their fields and offer one category of products. Most popular examples of category killers include electronic stores like Best Buy and sports accessories stores.

iv) General merchandise store:
It is a hybrid format between a department store and discount store. These retailers carry a wide range of products categories though the number of different items within a particular product line is generally limited.
