South Indian Tamil Brahmin Iyer weddings, like many other Hindu weddings, typically last about 2–3 days. It is celebrated in the Vedic style, where importance is given to the traditions and rituals which have been passed on over centuries.
There are 27 ritualistic ceremonies overall that take place during the 3 days (pre-wedding, wedding and post wedding). I will expand on a few of them (not all) briefly, as they are very complex and cannot be dealt with in detail here. I will predominantly focus on the rituals that highlight the role of the bride and the rituals that are performed to augment her fertility and ability to bear children.
Iyer Brahmin families begin to search for a bride or a groom within the Iyer Brahmin community itself. The foremost criteria for potential spouses is compatibility of the Nakshatra. There are 26 Nakshatras in total. It is the star sign of the individual according to the Hindu calendar, which indicates the planetary positions at the time of the individual's birth, and are said to predict their character accurately. This compatibility is vital as it assures the success of a marriage between the bride and the groom. If their Nakshatras are compatibile, a ceremony called Vaang Nischaya is performed, where there is an exchange of thamboolam (coconut, betel leaf and arecanut) before elderly people of both families, by the brides and grooms parents, symbolizing the agreement of the union of the two families.

Since the bride's side organises the entire wedding, Iyer marriages always take place in the bride's place of residence. The groom and his parents travel to the bride's place the day before the wedding, after all the arrangements have been made. Sexual violence is a sensitive topic for any and every woman. Whether it is sexual harassment, rape, or domestic violence, no woman wants to be taken advantage of by any man or even a woman. In the article, “Not an Indian Tradition. The Sexual Colonization of Native Peoples,” author Andrea Smith contrasts sexual violence and history from white woman to Native American women. Sexual violence differs for woman of color than white women alone.
Azande marriages are more than just a typical agreement between a husband and wife; it includes a husband’s constant indebtedness to the wife’s family. To start the marriage process, an intermediary would be spent to the bride father. The bride father could reject the suitor immediately, or if impressed choose to discuss it her family, the orator and finally the bride. In Puerto Rican culture it is the groom’s father who makes the descions, as he arranges the marriage of his son often without the awareness of the future couple. Because of this unique tradition, it is clear that the importance of a Puerto Rican’s bride’s wealth resemble those of the Azande, because both value bride wealth as an important aspect of the marriage
The caste system is divided into four main categories- Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas and Shudras. The Brahmins who were mainly intellectuals are believed to come from Brahma’s head. The Kshatriyas, warriors and rulers, came from his arms. Vaishyas, traders, were created from his thighs. And at the bottom were the Shudras came from Brahma’s feet and did all the factory jobs.
The caste system holds the view that a person's caste influences their decision-making regarding marriage, employment, education, etc. Despite the fact that it is still in use today, the caste system underwent some major changes over time in India. In today’s time, according to Pew Research center they stated how in India, caste segregation is still widely practiced. For instance, a huge percentage of Brahmins said they would not accept a member of a scheduled caste as a neighbor. However, the majority of Indians believe that caste discrimination is not a major issue in the nation, and two-thirds of those who identify with scheduled castes or tribes also believe that their specific groups don't face a lot of prejudice.
Many parents in the world today still plan marriages for their children. For example, the members of Indian culture still practices arranged
In 2017, the obsession with culturally matching in adoption processes went too far in Britain (Mander). Sandeep Mander shared his and his wife’s story with The London Spectator in an article named “Too Indian to Adopt” on September 2, 2017. Sandeep and his wife are British Sikhs, but aren’t practicing ones. They like to think there is something out there, but they are far from being religious. Both Sandeep and his wife went to Roman Catholic schools growing up, they work in business, and their closest circle of friends are white British.
This is when an old straw broom or sticks were laid at the feet of the bride and groom, and together they jump the broom to show that the two families were joined. The broom ceremony is said to be a tradition that was kept from its original ancestral origins in Africa. This act of nuptials to this day is still in effect in the African American community. Although they had this act they were still did not have any rights to live together or to raise children together like a normal family. It was common for enslaved parents and children to live apart.
Leslie Ventura REL 100 Final Paper: Jewish Wedding Society today is made up of a mosaic of different cultures and religions. Visitors to the U.S. can see the incorporation of many traditions and rituals from other countries. Throughout history there have been many refugees who leave their homelands which has led to the spread of different cultures and traditions around the world. For Jews, the spread of Judaism was caused by diaspora, or dispersion of people outside their countries, which happened several times in history. Even though Judaism is widespread, there is a consistency in the basic traditions and holidays that are celebrated.

Certain behaviors are considered ideal when choosing a husband or wife. The parents of the bride or groom choose their son’s or daughter’s spouse; a groom’s parents desire a girl who will grow up to be good-looking and beautiful, because it is said that a man takes great pride in a beautiful wife. Light-skin, good teeth, and good height (not too tall) is desired. One of the most important qualities a groom’s parents desire is a girl with a sweet temper, one who does not become too angry too quickly. Faithfulness and hardworking are also qualities that are desired.
The details of the wedding ceremony suggest a lot of information about the communication style that is taking place throughout the ceremony. One type of information that is demonstrated throughout the ceremony is the idea of the Hindu religion being part of a high context culture. High context cultures are cultures that do not explicitly transmit message but instead meaning is implied by the environment (Lustig & Koester, 2013). The Hindu wedding ceremony is full of these indirect messages that are common with the high context culture. First there are a lot of symbols used in the wedding ceremony.
The tradition in India is that women at young ages are traded off as wives. What happens is that men and their families arrange marriages for these
Ceremony Ethnography In North American culture, weddings are usually a lavish celebration of joining two families. Recently, at a wedding I attended with my family, I noticed many things about the role of music in the wedding ceremony. Usually weddings are composed of a ceremony, with a reception or celebration afterwards. In this wedding, there was a limited role of music in the actual ceremony (other than the bridal procession/ “Here Comes the Bride” and when the newlyweds exited at the end of the wedding), however the role of music was more substantial in the wedding reception (in which there was celebratory music and dancing).
Love, Trust, and Family Renowned film critic Roger Ebert has praised Mira Nair’s Monsoon Wedding for the way that it “leaps national boundaries and celebrates universal human nature.” Indeed, despite the many differences that seem to divide people, there are also aspects of life that are present in the lives of everyone that can be used to relate and understand those with a different background. Throughout the story, the creators allow their audience to relate to a traditional Indian family through the emotions they share with the characters and the way that they deal with issues involving, love, trust, and family while still understanding the many differences between traditional American culture and the culture of those within the film.
