CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION 1.1 Research background Rice is an oldest crop plant and cultivated since ancient time. It belongs to the grass family (Germineae) and genus is Oryza. The genus Oryza consists of 21 wild and two cultivated species Oryza sativa and Oryza glaberrima Oryza sativa are widely cultivated in Asia, America and Europe. The subspecies Indica and Japonica are further classified into temperate (Japonica), tropical (Japonica), indica (Indica) and aus (Indica). The two subspecies of Oryza sativa are Indica and japonica comprised most varieties of rice and based on morphological and physiological traits, many of rice varieties can be placed in these two rice races (Oka, 2012). Rice (Oryza sativa) is a very important staple food for …show more content…
The iron stress causes the inhibition of seed germination, typical leaf-bronzing symptoms, stain, edges and poorly developed dark brown root system. The reduction in height and dry matter has a related with rice production and ultimately affect the rice yield. Fe2+ toxicity has been reported in many Asian countries, including, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, China, Philippines and India, there rice production are reduced by 12-100% depending rice cultivars tolerance to Fe2+ and on the toxicity severity (Audebert and Sahrawat, 2000). Aluminum (Al) when combines with acid soils, very toxic to the crop root system and ultimately a reduction in vegetative growth that resulting the lower crop production (Kochian, 1995). It is reported that from a total of 41,274,890 Km2 of potentially cultivated land, 19,863,000 Km2 or approximately half are influenced by Al3+ toxicity (Bot et al., 2000). Crop production in acid soil is reduced by 25-80% where Al3+ toxicity is limiting factor influencing crop production in acidic soil (Herrera-Estrella,
The Fluidity of Henrietta Lacks. Gender Norms & Racial Bias in the study of the Modern “Henrietta Lacks” Henrietta Lacks was an African American woman whose cancer cells were the source of the HeLa cell line, the first immortalized cell line and one of the most important cell lines in medical research. An immortalized cell line will reproduce indefinitely under specific conditions, and the HeLa cell line continues to be a source of invaluable medical data to present day. Lacks was the unwitting source of these cells from a tumor biopsied during treatment for cervical cancer at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, U.S. in 1951. The cells were then cultured by George Otto Gey who created the cell line known as HeLa, which is still
One of their most popular meals that they were known for enjoying was a rich cuisine based primarily on rice. Rice is what formed the link between the Gullah people and the people of Sierra Leone. Around the 1700s, the American colonists in Georgia and South Carolina discovered that rice would grow well in the semitropical country bordering their coastline which was known to be very moist. It was then discovered that the American colonists had no experience with the cultivation of rice, and African slaves were needed who knew how to harvest, plant, and process the crop. Plantation owners were then willing to pay high prices for slaves from the traditional rice growing regions of West Africa and this region was known as the “Rice Coast”.

In the time of the Enlightenment Period many changes were happening in society. In the late 17th and 18th century people called The Philosophers, met in French salons and English drawing rooms to discuss what they believed in. They made many great things happen and strived their best to make what they believed in something possible. The Enlightenment Philosophers imagined they could change the ways of society in many ways. They concluded that they could improve the laws, rights of women, religious rights, and also economic rights.
Our society would not be what it is today if it wasn't for the three French philosophers for the individual freedom, freedom in government, religion, economy, and gender equality. John Locke, Voltaire, and Adam Smith were four of the many great philosophers, who changed our society and the shaped the capitalistic democratic world that we live in today. These philosophers lived in a time of bright and amazing new ideas, known as the Age of Enlightenment or the Age of Reason. Here are the main ideas of Enlightenment. John Locke (1632-1704) was one of the three main French philosophers.
Enlightenment The enlightenment was a time in which leaders and philosophers promoted ideas during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries that influenced people's thoughts concerning politics, social justice, human progress and religion forever. As said by Philosopher Immanuel Kant, “Enlightenment is defined as the upset of the established order/the awakening of one’s mind/forsaking society’s imposed mindset and establishing one for yourself.” (Document 12) These scientists like Issac Newton and writers like John Locke were challenging the old ways and because of that people became socially aware.

Introduction: In this task I will be researching the effect that acid rain has on the rate of plant growth. Acid rain is any type of precipitation with a high pH, with high levels of nitric acids. The reason why I had chosen this topic was because acid rain seems to have a great effect on the effect of plant growth, and plants play a very important role in our ecosystem. Acid rain is a major problem in our environment when we are not able to neutralize the acidity.

Mindfulness meditation has been described ‘as the awareness that comes from paying attention to the present moment experience in a purposeful and non-judgmental manner’ (Bishop et al., 2004 cited in Brown, Bravo, Roos, & Pearson, 2014 p. 1020). Pearson, Brown, Bravo and Witkiewitz (2015) suggest there are five important features of mindfulness when practising such as focussing one’s attention to the present and avoiding distractions, non-judgmentally experiencing thoughts, non-reactivity to thoughts, labelling experiences and simply observing thoughts/feelings. Integrated with the literature, this portfolio will contain description of my experience with mindfulness meditation technique resulted from guided exercises from Rob Nairn’s book ‘Diamond
