3. Compare and contrast the idea of democracy in Ancient Greece and Rome. Which system was more democratic and why? Democracy is the modern day standard for governmental systems. However up until 500 BCE, the concept of Democracy was a foreign concept, and the great civilizations of that era were run by monarchs, aristocrats, and religious leaders of sorts.
From a traditional, agrarian society, the economy evolved to take on capitalist features, revolving around the concepts of supply and demand, and using machines in conjunction with human labour with the ultimate goal of making a profit in the market. With so much demand and supply, the government listened to the new ideas and that was the evolution of the give and take between the government and their citizens. The same applied for the creation of social duty as well. These massively impacted the agricultural and manufacturing processes as well, which led to further significant changes in the economic system. For instance, farm production, which was once done manually by hand and produced with the aim of feeding the immediate family, became commercialised.

There are many types of democracies but in my essay I will explain only two types of democracies which are direct democracy and liberal democracy Direct democracy is a form of democracy where citizens are given an extraordinary amount of participation in the legislation process and granting them a maximum political self determination. Political economies are very important and can be found all over the world. Political economies are not all the same and are used differently in various countries. The political economies of capitalism, socialism and communism are best understood as points on a single continuum, which each have unique qualities, but at the same time they all have significant problems associated with them. Comparing Economic Systems There are three different economic systems Traditional, Market and Command. The survival of any society depends on its ability to provide food, clothing and shelter for its people. Due to the fact that these three societies face scarcity, which means “The state of being scarce or in short supply”, decisions concerning WHAT, HOW and FOR WHOM to produce must be made. However, another similarity is that all societies have an economy or an economy system which is an organized way of providing for the wants and needs of their people. This determines on the type of economy system they have.

According to Peter Joyce (2005), the democratic government was initiated in the Greek city state of Athens in the fifth century B.C., so as a consequence, the word ‘democracy’ derived from two Greek words, demos (meaning ‘people’) and kratos (meaning ‘power’) , which means ‘government by the people’. Secondly, Giovanni Sartori (1997), a Political Science Researcher states that ‘democracy’ is an abbreviation that means Liberal Democracy.
