Indonesian Education Challenges Indonesia has the fourth largest population in the world in which almost seventy percent of the population are in the productive age. Geographically, it is the largest archipelago in the world with over than seventeen thousand islands around. Furthermore, Indonesia is very diverse in cultures and ethnics, also the natural resources that Indonesia has. With all of the riches, however, there are certain aspects that Indonesia has to develop, especially the education aspect. The limited access to education makes the resources that Indonesia has are not well explored, since the human resources are incompetence because they are not well educated. Ministry of Education set a regulation for compulsory education for the first twelve years (from elementary school until senior high school), furthermore government has set the curriculum for schools in Indonesia. Indonesian education system also applies national exam. National exam held in May every year for students who are in grade sixth, ninth, and twelve. To be able to reach higher education level, students have to pass the national exam. The typical case happens in Indonesia, teachers especially those who teach elementary school, junior high school, and senior high school are not well-paid and this decrease the people's interest to become a teacher. As a result, Indonesia faces insufficiency number of teachers. Even if the amount of teachers is enough, normally they prefer to work in metropolis cities because the salary is higher.
