The Industrial Revolution was overall a negative thing because if forced childhood labor, caused the environment to fail, and it brought many negative effects onto the people. The Industrial Revolution brought a big change upon the society, one example is childhood labor. Children were forced to work and were often severely injured because of the factory work they were assigned to do. In Document 10 it speaks about how severe these injures can get. Children’s fingers were often severely injured and in most instances cut off due to the factory machinery. Their arms were often caught in the machines and stripped all the way down to the bone and some were so severe that they had to amputate a limb. Children had to work to provide for their families …show more content…
With all the manufacturing of goods and all the gases created, pollution was released into the air. With all of this unhealthy polluted air, it began to decay the trees and really bring down the environment. In Document 12 James Nasmyth talks about how rather than seeing something beautiful, he saw the burning coals and steam slowly decay the trees. He says “We may fill our purses, but we pay a heavy price in the loss of nature and beauty.” This really goes to show how bad these factories were for the environment and how it also took a toll on the people. When there were just farm working and hand made goods everyone got to enjoy the natural beauty surrounding them. When the factories were introduced and all the beautiful pastures were messed up because of factory building many people couldn’t find that natural beauty that they once had. In Document 13 it speaks a little about what all the smoke did to the skies of London. They described London as one big black cloud. The government should have taken a more natural or nature friendly …show more content…
Because of the environment and smoke produced the skies were often hidden and there was no natural sunlight coming into the city to make people happy. In Document 13 it really goes into depth about how the civilians really felt and how bad their moods were. It says that whenever the skies were dark many people didn’t even care about their well-being and the sadness in that city was unexplainable. Many people often felt hatred, despair, and anger towards their loved ones. Some people were so depressed and sick of everything that they would end their lives. That is such a huge statement on how bad this change was to the people. All they did all day was work and stare up into a black sky that there became a time where nothing was worth it anymore. There was poverty and nobody even cared about those who were hurt or starving. This document gave an example that an Englishman is in such a bad mood because of the climate that he behaves like a brute beast and doesn’t care about anyone or anything. If you just so happen to be walking by this man and he knocks you over or shoves you he will not give an apology because he simply does not care. If he sees an old man in need of food and starving he will walk right passed him and not help. This goes to show how bad the people’s attitudes and feelings were, all because of a change in the economic
In the 18th to 19th century in Europe, the agricultural revolution made farming more efficient which allowed more people to get fed with less labor, which led to a massive population growth. With a much bigger and healthier population and new technologies and resources to take part, new factories emerged ran by capitalists and entrepreneurs. This in turn called for new ways of organizing human labor to maximize the benefits and profits from the new machines. Thus, the Industrial Revolution began and this idea slowly spread throughout Europe and eventually to the United States.
They cared a lot about improving their economy rather than improving the environment that was there long before they ever came to America. Document 9 shows a photo of a factory. The environment around it looks awful. It looks trashy with the wood scraps scattered about and the air looks so polluted, you can’t even see very far into the distance. The area also looks so degraded.
Industrialization was a time in which the lives of Americans were changing drastically. It was an era, that help shape America to the form that it is today. During the Industrialization, many may argue that it was a time where our people and land was treated horrible. But, this time period led us to greater and farther things that we didn’t know was possible. This Revolution was a step towards a dramatic and positive effect to America.
Industrialization’s negative effects were children had to work without an education, pollution came from all of the factories,
The Industrial Revolution was a period of great adaptation in manufacturing technology that lasted from about the year 1760 to 1900. It brought about much change, both for the better and the worse. The Industrial Revolution was more negative than positive for Europeans in the 19th century. For much of the Industrial Revolution, working conditions were unhealthy and dangerous for the low-skilled workers and living conditions in the city were unhealthy and unsafe. However, over the course of one-hundred years, the quality of life improved.
It was unacceptable since the pollution was bad and kids would be
Johnson’s view of London allows us to critically examine the similarity and differences with other urban areas 150 years later. Political, social, and economic agendas within these urban areas have evolved as well. The accounts of John Snow and Henry Whitehead show how new ideas
Culture and economy flourished, bringing livelihood and excitement. However, there were a few macabre results that can be seen as the “monsters” that Baudelaire was talking about. During the Victorian Era, London emerged as a prolific metropolis, characterized by an extreme period of urbanization, which resulted in major developments in jobs and housing, as well as causing side effects of industrialization and overpopulation.
Opportunity overpowers the negative factor of the architecture and locomotives being unfriendly to the environment. Another positive factor that outdoes the negative is the advantages of mass production. In the article about nineteenth century architecture,“While the battle of styles was engaging the energies of the architects, great changes were introduced in industry. Mass production became possible in glass, iron and later steel” (19th Century Architecture). Mass production came about in the early 20th century by way of Henry
People were coming from rural areas to cities in search for work, causing the population of cities to increase. Due to the population increase, cities became too crowded and overpopulated with the working class. Their workplaces and housing developments were very unsanitary. The population increase led to sewage systems to overflow and wastes to quickly accumulate in the city. People were often crowded together in three to four room houses due to the very small area, and there was simply not enough room for everyone.
Since laws were published to force factory owners to pay out the minimum wage to the workers, the working class began to make more money. On the other hand, middle class has emerged out of the wealthy upper class, this leads to a better life for everyone. Besides all those positive impacts about the Industrial Revolution, there are also some negative impacts on working conditions. First of all, factories are mostly dirty and dangerous.
Child labor was a great concern in the Industrial revolution but very few people did something to stop it. Women and Children were forced to work more than 10 hours a day with only forty minutes to have lunch. Elizabeth Bentley once said that they didn’t have any time to have breakfast or drink anything during the day. They worked standing up and if they didn’t do their work on time they were strapped (whipped). Children were treating like they were not important, like they didn’t deserve a better life.
The industrial revolution created an age of wonder for the rich but also created a nightmare for the workers powering the industrial revolution. The period of rapid industrial growth during the 1800s and into the early 1900s was more harmful because of poor working conditions, violent labor disputes and poor regulations at factories. The businessmen of the industrial revolution created poor working conditions for men and women just
During the Industrial Revolution many events occurred. Many people suffered especially the poor. For example, the children were put to work in atrocious conditions.(Working and Living ) The workers worked for fourteen to sixteen hours a day for six days a week and would get paid very little.(Working and Living ) Despite the little pay, there were many other disadvantages.
Defarge is angry that he has lost most of his loved ones to the war that is taking place in England. “No more can I set the leaves of this valuable work that I loved, and hopelessly hope in time to read it all” (Dickens 130). He is angry that he cannot turn his life around and enjoy it, however, he still hopes that everything will go back to the way it was. He is angry that at the moment he cannot live to enjoy life thoroughly. . In France, the leaders oppressed the civilians for a long time that a huge number of them were starving.
