This paper examines the role of governance in environmental inequality in the Niger Delta. Fair access to environmental resources could help to guarantee human security and mitigate violence.
Root causes of environmental inequality in Nigeria’s Niger Delta can be linked to government policies and laws such as the Land Use Act and the negative impacts of the activities of multinational oil corporations. Environmental inequality and its concomitant effects produce a trend to conflict in the Niger Delta.

noted, the critical factors which are the causes of the conflicts in the Niger
Delta are poverty, unemployment, bad governance, environmental degradation and scarcity
[12]. Environmental degradation and scarcity breed conflict accelerating factors such as rising poverty and unemployment which are central to the frustration, discontent and anger that provoke violent agitations. Youths are denied the opportunity of decent living and deprived of productive sources of livelihood. The youths are jobless, idle, hungry, miserable and frustrated. They are effectively deprived of dignity. This makes them easy to mobilise.
The social discontent, frustration and anger have led to social vices, restiveness and violence [28]. Environmental protection would help to safeguard the rights of the citizens to a clean environment and ensure peaceful coexistence in the Niger Delta [29].
Effective institutional reform is the key to improving the condition of people in the
Niger Delta. This is because of the poor governance and corruption, which are related, distort socio-economic and political activities in societies. Institutional reforms and a sincere fight against corruption are the keys to ensuring sustainable peace in Nigeria. Law
Marsha Coleman-Adebayo- A Whistleblower INTRODUCTION-BACKGROUND In 1996, Marsha Coleman, the MIT trained expert working as a senior policy analyst for United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in South Africa filed a complaint against a mining company operating there and extracting vanadium which was harming not only environment but also human and animal health. Her complaint in the same department for which she was working went unheeded due to the connivance among the alleged company and EPA. But Marsha took this matter to other environment friendly organizations to which EPA reacted adversely and subsequently halted the promotion of Marsha.
Moncrief identified the environmental crisis as having three major areas of improvement - an absence of personal moral direction concerning our treatment of our natural resources, inability to adjust to stress, and a faith in technology. The area of improvement that pertains the most to the Salton Sea crisis is moral disparity. As stated within the article, corporate executives are often praised for increasing profits by ignoring pollution abatement laws. As discussed by Bullard, the current law requires a person to sue a polluter to invasion of human rights which can be difficult for those who cannot economically afford the lawyers needed to sue these large companies. For this reason, pollution and other environmental issues disproportionately impact oppressed groups.
Introduction On October 1st 1960 , British rule over Nigeria as a colony ended, as well as most of its official structure. Nigerian leaders were left with the task of taking up the leadership of the Nigerian people from the British with a promise of democratic rule; however within fifteen years after independence various institutions experienced great changes bringing great instability and uncertainty to the newly founded government. Northern and Southern regions of Nigeria both felt the impacts in education, politics, religion and ethnically. This causes one to wonder what the British Imperialistic government did differently, and why the difference between the Southern and Northern region became so evident in the fifteen years after independence.
As time passes, the importance of environmental considerations is increasing more and more in the society. For projects like these, ExxonMobil must realize that they are affecting the ecosystem, air, biodiversity, human population, fodder, forests, agriculture etc. and this means a lot to Chad and
Throughout the ages, many nations have been known to do whatever it takes to sustain a valuable supply of resources. For this reason, however the exploitation of resources by countries using unfair means is an enduring issue for many groups of people. Exploitation of resources is when the government or outside forces take advantage of a nation’s resources. This issue is significant because it causes civil conflict and war, can impact people of nations terribly, and can destroy industry. Problems created by exploitation of resources can be seen in examples from Sierra Leone, the Congo and British India.
From the sociological perspective, it was a huge social, cultural, economic and psychological threat for the communities living across the coastlines, cleanup workers, and especially children. Firstly, oil was released into the sea; it spread out on the surface of the water and contaminated the sea and coastlines. Statistics had shown that the Gulf oil spill killed 3,902 birds, 517 turtles, 71 marine mammals and more than thousands of other wildlife animals under the sea are covered by oil during or after the disaster (Merchant, 2010). Besides, the contaminated
It explains how oil has led to corruption and large environmental impacts. Some of the environmental impacts include oil spills in large bodies of water and gas flares in the Niger Delta. The documentary ties in how urban sprawl impacts the use of vehicles and the amount
Various metals were recorded well above the recommended standards set out by the World Health Organization, and this could have a lasting effect on the composition of the river’s water, as well as the nearby ocean water in which the river runs into. This is a big problem, and people should care, because it doesn’t only affect wild animals, these substances can have an impact on human civilization as well. Even for those of us who don’t care about the environment, this problem could affect your clean drinking water, which is why it needs to change, or stop. If these off-shore drilling operations can’t comply with the standards set by the WHO, they will have a lasting effect on the Niger-Delta’s environment. All this, for the sake of what?
For example, the Niger Delta had over 550 oil spills in 2014 and Royal Dutch Shell and ENI, two large transnational corporations, are to blame (Krause). Their ecosystem is collapsing and people are being forced to move their families and relocate. Nigeria had environmental laws in place regarding the safety of the Delta since 1978, and the catastrophic spills still occurred. These companies move to places where they know the laws are not effectively reinforced and the environment is the one that takes the
Critical Race Theory (CRT) in principle summarizes the fact that despite being widely criticized, racism is still a part of present day and modern society and may be important in the functioning of institutions and social practices. The CRT pursues to inspect, from a legal viewpoint, the conducts in which main origins of race (and to some extent, culture and identity) preserve relations of authority, oppression and injustice. In South Africa, the need of such a critical engagement with race and law is justified by a long history of institutionalised white supremacy and white racial privilege which today coexists with ongoing forms of anti-black racism and racial exclusion, because of our past of colonialism and apartheid. The CRT, however, argues that indeed there are many international
The Niger River was the life-blood of Mali, and was imperative to helping the empire become prosperous and dominant. Mali lay along the upper Niger River and the fertile soil helped Mali to grow, and allowed the people to control trade on the winding body of water. However, Mali’s rise to power began under a ruler named Sundiata. When Sundiata was a child, a despotic ruler conquered Mali, but then later as an adult Sundiata built up an army and won back his country’s independence. In the 1230’s he vanquished nearby kingdoms including Ghana.
The African Kingdom of ghana is sort of like the other Kingdoms, for example the Kingdom of Mali is just like Ghana because they are both in West African close to the sahara desert and so is the kingdom of songhai that’s one thing they all have thats in common. The African Kingdom of Ghana was a kingdom in Africa from the 6th till the 12th century. The trading activities in Ghana were mostly the sale of gold and Kola nuts. In Ghana they also sold Ivory to cities along the Mediterranean in exchange for salt.
Abstract The purpose of this paper is to study the Niger Delta conflict and contribute to the ongoing debates on greed vs. grievance thesis as to the cause of the Niger Delta conflict. To begin with, the central focus of this study is to determine whether greed and grievance factors has a link to the conflict or are applicable to explaining the causes of the conflict. The study adopts resource conflict debate as the anchor of the research but greed vs. grievance theory stands for the analytical and interpretation of data. The studies of different scholars regarding resource conflict theory were outlined and analyzed for the purpose of this paper.
Whenever there is an attempt of protest from the oppressed for oil company activities and environmental damage, Nigerian security forces have repeatedly beaten, detained and even killed people. The acts by oil companies continue to trouble the Niger Delta region to
