A Study on the Influence of Interior Design Television Shows on the Youth’s Selection of Interior Design as a Profession
Interiors make up the modern world. Many people hire interior designers to design their houses, offices or stores- to be able to keep up with the trends. The different types of media, most notably the internet and television, are these people’s sources of trends. Lifestyle networks, for instance HGTV, ABC, Style, and FYI broadcast show the focus on interior design. Popular interior design programs, for example, are Property Brothers, Clean House, and Extreme Makeovers. Shows like Modern Living TV, Interior Motives, and Design Para sa Lahat are aired in the Philippines. These shows have been in the media since the early 1990's.

House vs. House is a show on FYI Network where amateur and experienced designers team up and compete with other designers. Each team must come up with a design where they focus on DIY projects. Another show on the same network, Rowhouse Showdown, where three teams battle it out to transform rundown , dilapitated houses in Cincinnati, Ohio. “Taking on the rundown houses in a distressed neighborhood, the teams will renovate one home each – while also living together – in a bid to raise the property value of the community surrounding them” (FYI Network Website).
In the Philippines, Lifestyle Network dominates the genre. Created by ABS-CBN Corporation, Lifestyle features shows that focus on interiors, cooking, gardening, travel, and beauty. Shows like ‘Interior Motives’, ‘Green Living’, and ‘Feng Shui Living’ are part of the interior design segment.
These kinds of shows gives you a glimpse on how the designing career works, but just like what Dennis Laker mentioned, these shows do not necessarily portray the reality (qtd. in Tucciarone 173). However, these kinds of shows can influence teenagers to pursue interior design as a profession. In “Working at McDonald’s”, Amitai Etzioni depicts the reasons why teenagers do not gain much from McDonald’s type jobs. Etzioni argues that working part time jobs especially in fast food chains undermine youngsters’ school attendance and involvement and do not expose them for the skills needed in later life. The topic of teenagers having jobs while in high school can be considered controversial and is definitely one that generates a lot of opinion both for and against this practice. Mr. Amitai Etzioni’s has a negative position on this issue as was stated in his article “Working at McDonald’s”. I on the other hand believe that having a job is a way for teenagers to learn how to be independent and obtain good working skills that will stay with them for a lifetime. Graphic designer, Louise Fili, grew up in an Italian-American family in New Jersey and fell in love with the homeland of her parents at the age of 16 years. Since then, her passion for design, typography and Italian food has influenced her career as a designer. Fili went to study studio arts at Skidmore College but instead found graphic design, as she states in an interview “I went to Skidmore College where, if you couldn’t paint, they told you that you were graphically oriented. That’s when I found out what graphic design was.”. Later in the 1970’s, she completed her final semester at the School of Visual Arts in New York and at the age of 25 she become senior designer for Herb Lubalin.
Frank Lloyd Wright is considered to be the pioneer of modern architecture. He created an identity for American architecture, while rejecting Neoclassical and Victorian style designs. Wright called this “organic architecture”. It is architecture that is simple, yet modern and co-exists with architecture. He provided a new perspective on architecture and “The American Style”.

Most would agree that, in early stages of life, art is a detrimental and necessary part of any child’s early development and education. In fact, Pre-K through third grade’s education curriculum is usually centered around promoting early creativity and a fondness for learning. Kids learn math by counting colorful pieces of bricks. They learn both science and the basic principles of functionality by playing with train sets and toy cars.
They need the design works to earn their salary and take care of their family. Nowadays, design has already included several types of jobs. For examples, there are product designer, fashion designer, graphic designer, interior designer and many more. These careers and occupations has already contributes more to the society with their professional works. Hence, people can get the easier ways to solve their daily problems and enjoy their life with the creative tools that invented by the designers.
