Socialization across the life course
Socialization is something that every individual shall go through during their life whether they are a child or adult. It is what prepares and teaches us to adjust to the customs and norms of a society. Peer Group is an important factor when it comes to socialization. This is what helps during our earliest years to find our identity. To figure out where it is that we 'fit in'. But next to peer groups, parental influence is also, equally important. I can personally vouch for this factor, because it is what helped me to figure out my true identity as a young adolescent, transitioning into adult hood.
Personal Milestone
Personally, for me it wasn’t easy finding my identity. But, what helped was the influence

Self-development is especially important for college students. It helps us to learn new life skills that could mature our minds for life after college and to overcome bad habits, such as partying every weekend. But there are different views and theories when it comes to self-development.
George Herbert Mead
Meads point of view was called 'self'. He felt that it was important for an individual to be able to view themselves through the eyes of others. Kind of like Charles Cooley's perspective of self-development "the looking glass self". Through this theory of self-development. We learn to put ourselves in someone else's shoes and look at the world from someone else's point of view other than our own. He explained that it is important to have a "self". To be able to imagine how we are viewed by others. I feel that this theory best explains my personal socialization because as I continue to grow older, I still sometimes wonder how I am perceived by others. I always wish that I could see myself through the eyes of the people that hang around me because I know it is way different than how I see

Different jobs require different types socialization. In today's society it is common for adults to switch where they work if not monthly, yearly, so with those work place changes, they must become socialized wherever they decide to work.
Religion
Religion is important aspect of socialization as well. Cities all over are filled with churches, and holy temples where people who practice a certain religion go to worship and learn more about their culture. These people that meet at these ceremonies usually share the same socialized values within their society.
Government
Being that the government sets its own "norms" that we basically live by today for example, having to be 18 to get a driver's license, each time a new norm is set we have to be socialized into our "new role".
Defining Groups
Groups can be defined as two or more people that interact on a frequent basis and share a sense that their identity is aligned with the rest of the group. Charles Cooley suggested that groups could be divided into two categories, Primary groups and Secondary
The looking glass self by Charles Cooley states that an individual’s self grows from society's interpersonal interactions and the perceptions of others and it happens in three steps. Step one in this thought process would be how do we appear to others and after the assassination of Khalil, Starr starts to behave differently. Hailey and Maya notice the difference and tell Starr that she's been acting different and they ask if she was friends with Khalil. Starr was afraid that Hailey and Maya will treat her differently if they knew the truth so she denies knowing Khalil. The second step to this thought process is what other might think of me.
Chapter two in the textbook Reflect & Relate an Introduction to Interpersonal Communication by Steven McCornack talks all about what “self” is and how to achieve complete fulfillment for one’s self which is also known as self-actualization. The components of self, as described in the book are, “ . . . self-awareness, self-concept, and self-esteem” (McCornack 39). Self-awareness is the idea in which one can take a moment to move feelings, beliefs, and other external influences aside and just evaluate oneself in a holistic perspective that is not skewed by opinions of others, etc. Having the ability to actually think about who one is brings a lot of power and mental stability in such a way that allows for improvement.
The most influential agent of socialization I the family. In this chapter this is shown, generally the kids in “street” families had the tendency to act similar to their parents. “The kind of home he comes from influences but does not determine the way he will ultimately turnout,” (105). The kids would be quick to hit someone else if they did not get their way, they would yell and argue in very unorderly fashions, just like they had seen their parents do or other adults they had been surrounded by. Aside from family peers are also a strong agent of socialization, especially in a system like this in which children are raised through accomplishment of natural growth, in which they are surrounded by other children in all their free time and often times children not in their age group.
Socialization is the process where individuals acquire the language, social skills, and values to conform to the norms of a specific society or culture. Socialization is shown many times throughout GI Jane. Some examples are: Lt. O’Neil’s boyfriend, who is also a military member, does not support her and feel that she should attempt the impossible as she is a woman. He would represent both a family or peer agent in this movie. When she arrives the Commanding Officer greets her and attempts to steady or pull the chair out for her as that is a common gesture to do for women.
“An individual perception of self, of body image, of time, of space influences the way he or she responds to object and events in his/her life. As individuals grow and develop through the lifespan, experiences with changes in structure and function, of their bodies over time influence their perceptions of self” (King, 1981, p. 19). These concepts give us the basis for understanding how individuals are personal systems. Perception, is “A process of organizing, interpreting, and transforming information from sense data and memory” (King, 1981, p. 24).
Social development is the way in which a child or young person learns to fit in to the world that they live in. Developing emotional resiliance, self reliance, principles, morals and learning to maintain friendships and relationships with others. In the first six months of life, babies will communicate through crying to express their needs, such as hunger, tiredness, warmth or emotional comfort. They will smile and form a close bond with their main caregivers.
In Mcleod’s article, it said that people “‘think about, evaluate, or perceive’ themselves” (Mcleod 1). Mcleod talks, in the article, about how people thinking, evaluating, and perceiving about themselves is call self-concept. Whenever people think about themselves, most of the time, people are confused about whether or not they are pursuing right actions for their future, especially people with low self-esteem . Furthermore, people get more confused if their actions dramatically differ from others. However, again, people’s actions determine who they are, so even if their actions are dramatically different from others, it may be a path for that person’s success.
Chapter 3 – Socializing your puppy What does socialization mean? It means learning to become part of society. When we speak of socializing our puppies, it means assisting them to be comfortable as a pet involved within the society of human beings. This human society includes people of different types, environment, noises, sight, smells, different animals and other dogs. Socialization may not be a concept, but it is one of the most vital things you can do for your puppy.
As with the case of Genie, we can see that the most important agent of socialization is our family because it is the first social contact that we have. Family determines “our race, language, religion, religion, class and political affiliation,” and helps shape who we are. When parents pass on information to their children, most of the time they don’t realize that what they are passing on to their children is what was passed onto them by their parents/caregivers. Today in society because times are changing and we don’t have control over what family we are born into, our socioeconomic status can differ from others. If we are born in a family that is middle class, we can be socialized differently as opposed to someone who is of low socioeconomic
Member of society have a mindset that agent of socialization is one of the origin that influenced the reinforcement of gender inequality since childhood. What is socialization? In lexical definition, socialization, as a lifelong interactive process, contains individual’s culture learning that is in compliance with social norms and roles to integrate into community (Socialization, n.d.). Childhood is the most influential period of socialization which agents of socialization impact the way children behave that related with social norms.
The purpose of this essay is to identify socialization, contributions to socialization and the agents of socialization. Socialization? Socialization is the process an individual goes through from the day they are born to the day they die. Sigmund Freud, Jean parget, Lawrence Kohlberg, George Herbert Mead and Charles Horton Cooley all contributed to socialization. Sigmund Freud talked about human personality, he said there are three parts of a human personality.
Nurture is the Key to Human Developments Nurture is the entirety of environment influenced aspects which impact the growth and actions of an individual. Socrates believed that nurture plays a large role in the development of the individual because it can help gain self understanding, decide the way people view the world, and affect people’s nature. By learning knowledge from the world, people are able to identify themselves by understanding things like thoughts, actions, and emotions. For instance: through interactions with others, people can learn what a positive person is like. They have smiles on their faces all the time and won’t easily be affected by bad news.
‘Conscious bringing into awareness of a greater understanding of both who, and how, we are in the world is known as the process of personal development’ (Parfitt, 2006 as cited by Share & Lalor, 2009, p233). By actively working on our self-development we can advance and progress and not be stuck at a certain point. ‘The social care worker is not practising to his or her full potential if they are not engaged in awareness and development of the self’ (Share & Lalor, 2009, p123). ‘Self-awareness, self-management and self-care are critical elements of emotional and professional competence’.
DEVELOPMENT PSYCHOLOGY: REFLECTIVE ESSAY In life of an individual there are several developmental changes or events which occur as continuity of span of life. Some of life developmental stages include infantile, adolescence, maturity, and adulthood. These phases have biological, social, psychological and physiognomic reasons to which an individual completed the course of life. Psychological analysis upon the developmental stages include the focus on characterization, demarcation and the social interaction of individual’s life (Baltes & Schaie, 2013).
