Gun Control: Assault Weapons Should be Banned in America In the past decade there have been many mass shootings which sparked a nationwide debate on the ban on assault weapons. Assault weapons are Semiautomatic weapons that are usually used in the military due to their advanced features. The difference between a Semiautomatic weapon and a regular pistol is that semiautomatic guns reload automatically and can fire consistently (Assault Weapons). Majority of Americans argue that Assault Weapons should be banned nationwide because of the amount of mass shootings caused by Assault weapons.
Around 80 million americans own about 223 million guns. Therefore Assault Rifles should not be banned from american citizens. Banning assault rifles would interfere with the second amendment of the United States of America. Within the second amendment, it states citizens have the “Right to bear arms.” “It is a constitutional right to bear arms.”
California was the first state to ban “assault weapons” after a school shooting in Stockton. A federal ban went into 1994 and since then, eight states have “assault weapons”. However, these laws have had very little significance. This is because these firearms are just ordinary rifles, it is almost impossible for legislators to effectively regulate them without putting a ban on half of the handguns in the country and many hunting rifles. Instead, lawmakers have focused on the cosmetic aspect of the firearm. The ban was on all semi-automatic rifles with detachable magazines and two or more military-style features like bayonet attachments and a flash suppressor. Gun makers have been relatively unaffected by these changes. They can sell the same
Good afternoon. I am here to help fight for the cause to save your lives. Imagine this; you are taking a test in one of your classes. Then you hear a gunshot and the entire school goes into lockdown. Your friend, or sibling gets shot, while in the hallway, but for your own safety, you can’t leave your hiding spot. When the criminal is finally arrested, there a dozens of people who have been killed, injured, or fatally injured. All because of one man with a gun. Do you really want your life to be at risk because there is no law banning assault weapons? Do you want to walk down the hallway in fear of someone coming at you with a gun? According to an article from the Washington Post, written by Christopher Ingraham, the president/founder of a public opinions research, the ban on assault weapons lapsed, or expired, in 2004. This resulted in an increase by 183% of shootings and by 239% of deaths by guns. Obviously, this is a problem, that both puts people’s lives at risk and makes some live in fear.
World War I. America needed an advantage to beat Germany and their allies. So a true patriot created one of the first assault weapon and named it the Thompson submachine gun. The weapon would of made a big difference on the war ,but it was created when the war was over. So gangsters acquired the weapons and killed many lives. New assault weapons came and ended more lives. Gangsters might be gone ,but criminals are still around and they use assault weapons for their preference of mass murdering. Assault weapons should be banned.
Gun Violence In America Gun violence in america accounted for 33,636 deaths in 2015 alone and that number is only rising. If every american was able to obtain a firearm imagine what the numbers of gun related deaths. Even gun related injuries caused many more hospital visits in america what many other common incidents. That is why america needs to implement tighter gun laws to reduce the amount of gun violence in America. Without this we will continue to see shooting, gun death, gun injuries resulting in more and more gun related violence.
and fearmongering. The “assault weapons ban” that some are trying to pass is essentially useless as the majority of attacks do not involve these types of rifles, also the weapons they are trying to ban are only aesthetically different than other rifles under the same ban. An assault weapon is also a made up term used to scare people. Anything could be an assault weapon, it would add a lot of credibility to the anti-gun argument if correct terms were used. Also most people talk about the magazine and call them “clips” which is incorrect. If people wish to make an argument they should learn the correct terminology. Gun crime has gone down in recent years and gun ownership has gone up. It is important to note that correlation is only evidence
This particular gun can be customized to kill even more efficiently with bump-fire stocks, which are completely legal (2018). The accessibility and popularity of this gun has made it the weapon of choice for many. This type of weapon has no place on the streets and neighborhoods of American people, which is why a ban on semiautomatic weapons and bump-fire stocks would prevent such lethal shootings, like the Orlando nightclub shooting where 50 people were killed or the Las Vegas shooting where 58 people were killed on the streets (The Washington Post, 2018). Many will say that a gun is a gun or that mass killings could be done with a knife, however, allowing anyone to buy a semiautomatic weapon and customize it to shoot at fast as an automatic gun that is used to fight in war combat is certainly not
Guns are just a tool, like knives and hammers and it completely depends on the people on how they use it. People who support guns and arms say that the Second Amendment secures individual’s right to carry guns with them and that gun rights is needed for self-protection, and was intended for military to have peace and defend the country if needed (Spitzer, 70). Most of the Americans use guns as a source to protect themselves and they believe that gun ownership prevents crime. A study conducted on November 26, 2013 showed that bans on weapons did not significantly affect murder rates at the state level (Lane, 5). Moreover, even if the rules and regulations are executed on gun control, not all criminals obey the law. Criminals do not care about
One side calls them weapons of war, the other side claims the term “assault weapon” is merely an intimidating term used to scare liberals and anti-gun advocates. In 1994, President Bill Clinton signed a national ban on assault weapons. The assault weapons ban comes with a sunset effect and every 10 years the ban automatically expires and every gun advocate crawls out of hiding to make sure the ban doesn’t renew (“Should the government restrict access to assault weapons?”). Congress needs to stand up to the NRA to reinstate the ban. Assault weapons are militarized styled guns that are meant to kill a mass number of people at an alarming rate and these weapons should not be in the hands of ordinary citizens.
America has been set on ideals created centuries ago; focusing on freedom and fighting for the rights of many. However these ideals once used to protect the nation are being misinterpreted by far too many people today. Guns have always played a big role in the lives of Americans, and many believe it is a necessity and all should have the right to own one. What they are unaware of are the average 13,000 gun homicides that take place within a year. Guns are slowly but surely becoming the leading cause of death in America.
The definition of an assault rifle is muddy, as avid gun owners tend to disagree with the term as it’s used. Most say that assault rifles should only be defined as fully automatic military-style rifles (Goode), but for ease of understanding, let’s assume that they are what most of the public refers to them as- semi/fully automatic weapons. From the years 1982-2012, 99 of the weapons used in mass shootings were semi automatic handguns or rifles (Follman). In the Las Vegas shooting, where one man killed 58 and injured over 800, local police found 18 assault weapons in his hotel room (Alsup). This, coupled with America’s history of mass shootings, is a justifiable reason to at least bring up a
But what should be done about assault weapons? There should be no reason for homeowners and everyday citizens to own such things as an AR-15 or a Machine Gun. Assault weapons should not be permitted in the US. The majority of assault weapons that are used for these shootings are acquired legally by shooters. In some of the most recent major attacks, “killers in Las Vegas and Orlando attacks… walk into gun shops and legally purchase assault weapons” (Ingraham).
Guns are more accurate, powerful, and faster than ever before and are nothing any of our founding fathers have ever witnessed. A semi-automatic gun can kill a lot of people in a short amount of time and it is hard to tell when someone is carrying a semi-automatic handgun. Making it easy to walk into public places and commit a mass shooting. Semi-automatic pistols are the leader in mass shooting weapons and many use them to commit crimes. A majority of these handguns are used for home defense and recreation.
Mr Lapierre, Do you know of the 8 year old who is afraid she will be shot during lock down by a psychopathic student because her shoes light up? Do you know of the 14 year old who got shot because she refused to go to prom with a boy? On average there are nearly 13,000 gun homicides a year in the U.S. In January 2018 alone there have 28 shootings with varying numbers of killed and injured people. 28.
