“... O say does that star spangled banner yet wave, o’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.” Nearly every American can recite the final lines of our National Anthem. However, few take the time to truly contemplate the meaning of these words. When I hear these phrases, I think of the principles on which our country was founded: the right to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness. But perhaps more important than these rights are the defenders of them: our veterans. Ninety-eight years ago, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, an armistice was declared between Germany and the Allied Nations in World War I. One year later, it was celebrated as Armistice Day to honor the cause of world peace. After World War II and the Korean War, it was renamed Veterans Day, dedicated to American veterans from any war. The transition from Armistice Day to Veterans Day seems appropriate, for we would not have peace if we did not have veterans. But the implication that veterans are mere preservers of order is a vast misrepresentation; they do much more for our nation. They uphold the standards of freedom. They protect the dreams of our youth by …show more content…
Battle scars, wounds that run deeper than the lacerations themselves, trauma and heartbreak that we will never understand- all for our nation. Thanks to them, we can enjoy a high quality of life in a safe, peaceful country. The Bill of Rights and the Constitution would not have meaning if they were not defended; our personal liberties would be nonexistent and our aspirations would not be possible. America is beautiful in that uniqueness is embraced and the spread of ideas is promoted, not stifled. Our hopes and dreams can only be achievable when liberty and freedom are upheld. Veterans’ sacrifices ensure our citizens’ dreams will be within reach in a country that is, in all senses of the word,
“It is the Soldier, not the minister, who has given us freedom of religion. It is the Soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the Soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the Soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us freedom to protest. It is the Soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial.
We celebrate Veterans Day every year on November 11th to honor the men and women who served and is still serving our wonderful country. We shouldn’t honor a veteran just once a year but everyday because they are protecting us everyday. When we say the pledge in the mornings we should be thinking about our veterans and what they did for us. Many veterans we get to still celebrate with and some were not so lucky and didn’t make it back home to their loved ones.
We have memorial day to remember all the people who died for our country freedom. It was officially was declared on may 5, 1886 by General John Logan. On the first decoration day General James Garfield made a speech at Arlington National cemetery, and 5,000 participants decorated the graves of 20,000 union and confederate soldiers buried there. Memorial day also became more popular after World War I and World War II. There were more American lives lost during the Civil War then the two World Wars combined.
Veterans day is a time once a year that we celebrate on November 11.We celebrate to honer the people in the military for serving this country. On 1919 Woodrow Wilson declared that on November 11 it will always be known as Armistice day. Later on 1954 president Eisenhower change the Armistice day to the day we all know now Veterans day. People around the world celebrate Veterans day to thank the military. Veterans day is now the day we all love and honer the people for serving this
The veterans are coming! The veterans are coming! In the article "The veterans are coming! The veterans are coming!”
Ayden Duong Ms. Collins English 1 – Period 5 5/22/2023 Title: Subtitle "O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave" writes John Stafford Smith in the American national anthem "Star Spangled Banner". John Stafford Smith writes about the freedom and greatness of America in this song. He sings about how America is a land for the free and the home of the brave.
A veteran is someone who has served a long time in the military, no matter what their age. Veterans are important to our freedom because while serving their time, you have to remember that they are fighting for your right to be free in the United States. Without them, there wouldn’t be any freedom in this world. They fight for what they believe in and what is right for the country. You have to remember, these war vets are putting their lives on the line for people they don’t even know.
Another example is from Doc A when 35 veterans said, "that far from disrespecting our troops, there is no finer form of appreciation for our sacrifice than for Americans to enthusiastically express their freedom of speech." Moreover, to those who are against all positive reviews opinions, won’t consider the fact that even retired troop members support the messaging rights given to our citizens by its government. The U.S provides opportunities and there is no denying that we need to believe in good causes that will make an outstanding move and to understanding and learning of our own constitutional rights for what we
Helping our veterans should be mandatory because of their sacrifice. Even though some people believe war veterans acquire enough from the Government, others believe they deserve more for their services. Veterans of the United States of America should not be homeless since they fought for our country with a sense of bravery and commitment. Therefore, the Department of Veterans Affairs should be reconstructed, also expanded to meet the growing need of our veterans.
Every year, since 1971, Memorial Day has been observed as a national holiday in the United States, in which we honor those who died while protecting our country. To me, Memorial Day is a time where we as a nation, are reminded that all of the freedoms and rights that we take for granted, came at the cost of men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while protecting our country. When Memorial Day befalls its designated date, I am reminded that people fought and died for my freedom and rights. I am reminded that if people didn’t fight for me and for this country, it wouldn’t be the great and prosperous country that it is. Therefore, I take pride in the fact that someone went to war and died to protect my freedoms.
Some people take that for advantage. Veterans fought in the Civil War so that slaves can be free. We should thank the Veterans alive, dead, younger, and older. You may not know it but, there are veterans all around you.
Veterans are some of the bravest men and women that you will ever know. They fought for our country in our most desperate hours and risked their lives so we could have the chance to live ours. It is such a shame that they are ignored and even homeless in today 's society. I had wondered how we could get veterans of the street and back into the job world. After research I found that there are programs and methods put in place specifically to help these struggling veterans.
We don’t give enough respect to the veterans, especially kids. The women in today’s United States can vote and do almost everything a man can do, but in other countries, we aren’t even allowed to go to school or vote for what we think is right. We just kind of blow it off like it was nothing, we need to sit back and actually notice what they did and are still doing for us. Kids and even adults don’t think much of this topic until it’s a problem, they wouldn’t get to go to school/work, they might not have the rights to pick a job they wanted and just had to take what was given to
The US has grappled with many questions about society’s obligations as to whether or not to offer services and benefits to the men and women in the armed forces. Supporters argue that helping veterans will help the society as whole and opponents argue that we shouldn’t be increasing our federal government spending in repaying veterans. Although I do see where people can argue that we are spending too much money on helping veterans after war, I believe that the government owes them for what they have done for the country, despite the cost. The government owes certain benefits to veterans because the men and women in the armed forces deserve to be welcomed home with a generous system of services for what they have done for the country. Helping veterans goes way back all the way to the 1600s.
In the United States, serving in the military is seen as a model of true patriotism, and rightfully so. Service members train for 10 weeks in their transition from civilian to a soldier. They train to be able to endure all the hardships that may come their way. Service members have to be in the best physical shape to serve and because of all that they do, they are thought of as brave and selfless people. Service members make extreme sacrifices to defend our country and act selflessly by doing so; it is fitting that they are seen as heroes by many Americans.
