Have you ever been blamed for something you did not do? After Abraham Lincoln 's assassination Stanton, the secretary of war, began to search for suspects that may have been involved in the assassination. One of whom was Mary Surratt a woman who was the mother of John Surratt Jr. and was the owner of the boarding house in H Street, Washington. Stanton claimed Mary as part of the conspiracy to kill Lincoln, and was given a death sentence for her crimes. Even though Mary Surratt was hanged she still deserved a better sentence as she did not get a fair trial against her.
She gives a brief background of her situation, by being arrested for voting in the last presidential election and fined. “I not only committed no crime, but, instead, simply exercised my citizen's rights, guaranteed to me and all United States citizens by the National Constitution,” she quoted in her first sentence making the question audiences mind set if they did agree with the authority when she was arrested. She was just exercising her right to vote under the constitution. In her third paragraph she says, “It was we, the people; not we, the white male citizens; nor yet we, the male citizens; but we, the whole people, who formed the Union. And we formed it.” She emphasizes on the word “we.” To make the audience realize the “we” means everyone together, every men and women together.
Antony claimed he was a descendant of Hercules because he had thick curly hair and was extremely handsome. At the time of their meeting, Cleopatra was 29 and purposely delayed her arrival to heighten the expectations of Antony. It was known that Cleopatra was legitimately in love with Antony, while historians believe he was enslaved by her seductive ways. Antony and Cleopatra were linked for 11 years and they formed a strong strategic union. Antony helped Cleopatra kill her last sibling, which gave her some control in the middle east.
Sounds of Resistance In 1939, WWII began when the Nazi Party invaded Poland, cousin six to nine million Jewish people to fear there live, this fear began when all citizens had to register with the government and the Jews had to wear the star of David. Second, the Jews were forced into ghettos. Third, they were in concentration and death camps. “The Diary of Anne Frank” violins of hope, “ Resistance during the Holocaust.” We see different ways of active and passive resisting Nazi atrocities. She risked so much not knowing if any of it would pay off. As she described living with the Jewish family, “Jews in hiding couldn’t be visible, so I stayed with them, it was the right thing to do.” (Burns 1). She had no strong ties to the Jewish faith and yet, of her own free will risked her life to help, for no other reason than that she knew that what was going on around her was wrong, and she wanted to do whatever she could to stop it. And how even after the war ended and she was free to go back to her normal life, she decided to continue working as a social worker to help those displaced in the war find their surviving family. People can learn from this that we need to stand up and show the same moral courage that Pritchard exhibited, and when faced with these types of injustices to take a risk to fight against them instead of hiding in fear, or simply brushing them to the side saying that there is nothing that they can do about
This shows strength because she was standing up for what she thought was right. Even though she knew that the Taliban might come for her. In fact in the in Diane Sawyer 's interview with Malala she states how the Taliban burned down all the girl schools and threw acid on the students and yet Malala kept learning every thought they had no school to go to. This shows how much strength she truly had especially young 11-year-old Malala. She cared about her education so much in fact that she was not scared off by the Taliban when they burnt down the schools or threw acid at the kids.
During the Holocaust, in 1939, Adolf Hitler and the Nazi party invaded Poland, causing six million Jewish people to fear for their lives, and to actively or passively resist the Nazis. This all started, when all citizens had to complete a census and carry an identification card. Second, the Jewish people had to wear The Star of David and were forced into Ghettos. Third, they were taken to the concentration and death camps. In “The Diary of Anne Frank,” “Violins of Hope,” and “Resistance during the Holocaust,” we read about incredible people passively resisting, some surviving the war, but still trying to withhold the Jewish culture.
In the year 1913, Emmeline Pankhurst went to Hartford, Connecticut to deliver a speech to American women, invigorating them to support the suffragettes’ cause in England. Before one can understand the speech, one must know the historical context that landed Pankhurst in Connecticut. When feminism was becoming more common in Europe after World War I, many judged feminists harshly, describing them as a “shrieking sisterhood” and manly, neglecting their duties at home. The negative feedback made many women negligent to describe themselves as feminists(“Feminism in
When she did that caused her to get shot in the head by the Taliban because she didn't agree with their laws for women's rights and their education. After she was shot, she was flown away to the United Kingdom where she was able to survive the bullet. Malala is a peaceful girl as before and she like any other girls except she has won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014 in the United Kingdom after her and family moved to escape the Taliban. While Malala is out there helping to save the world only making it better place for them, the Taliban are out there in the world to make it worse with their laws. Though some people try to get through the logistics and technicalities of the Holocaust, some just argue that it was completely untrue. Former Iranian President, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad stated that the holocaust was a “myth”. In an interview on live television Ahmadinejad stated, “They have created a myth in the name of the Holocaust and consider it above God, religion and the prophets” and also stated, “In Western countries, if someone were to deny the existence of God . . .
This is how America during the Cold War era overthrew Iran. “All knew they had changed the course of Iranian history (128).” This was not really a success because we invaded their territory because the British told America that Mossadegh was a communist and was not really clear as to why they needed American help. During the Invasion era, Reagan was awakened up early morning to hear devastating news, a Marine camp was blown up by a suicide bomber in Lebanon. Days before, Reagan approved of entering, but he could back out if he wanted. This event “intensified the desire of many Americans for some kind of revenge (223),” Americans wanted to show how strong our nation had become and wanted to prove
Although Giffords used advanced and well-developed diction, she was able to communicate clearly and unambiguously. Logos are also developed by citing facts and statistics. Giffords explains, “These senators made their decision based on political fear and on cold calculations about the money of special interests like the National Rifle Association, which in the last election cycle spent around $25 million on contributions, lobbying and outside spending.” Senators gave into fear and failed to protect the citizens of American. Giffords stamped those who voted against the bill as cowards. She states the amount as a bold print to prove that she knows exactly how much was spent in the last election cycle.
