Inherit the Wind by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee, portrays many characters to be extremely religious. Religion in the town of Hillsboro is a vital element in its daily life. One day a teacher by the name of Bert Cates teaches Charles Darwin´s theory of evolution to his class, which teachings go against the Bible. Matthew Harrison Brady, a famous politician, comes to town to defend the Bible in the name of God by prosecuting Bert Cates, who is assumed to be an evolutionist, to prove to the world that Christianity isn’t a force to be taken lightly with. However, a infamous defense attorney named Henry Drummond stands in Brady’s way. To be religious is to know and defend your religion’s scriptures and to believe in your god, and by far, Brady …show more content…
When Drummond question´s Brady, Drummond asks him if he can be called as an authority on the Bible and Brady responds with ¨There are many portions of the Bible that I have committed to memory¨(2.2.76). While extracting this quote, we can observe that Brady admits to committing memory to the Bible in front of the courthouse during a monumental case in all of Hillsboro history. To admit this in front of countless numbers of people, he must have been very confident in his memorization. Individuals on the witness bench are asked to take an oath stating that he or she will tell the truth and nothing else thus it is extremely unlikely for Brady to be lying. Therefore his statement is authentic which leads to the fact that he is devout in his religious studies. However, there are other ways to demonstrate faith other than mere …show more content…
During the beginning of his visit to Hillsboro he delivers a speech to the citizens. He annunciates “I am here to defend that which is most precious in the hearts of all of us: the Living Truth of the Scriptures”(1.1.18)! In his speech, he expresses devotion to Christianity by traveling all the way to Hillsboro from his own home just to persecute one person, Bert Cates. By prosecuting Bert Cates, a teacher who broke a law regarding religion by teaching evolution, he is defending the Bible while at the same time showing the world that going against the teachings of Jesus Christ has dire consequences. He states that the living truth of the scriptures is what is most precious in the hearts of all of them which indicates that the Bible is precious enough for him, a extremely well known public figure such as himself to defend rather than another prosecutor. Nevertheless, believing in your religion is another basic yet required component to faith, A greater way Brady shows his faith in Christianity is through complete acceptance of the Bible. During a pivotal moment of the trial, Drummond asks Brady how the Bible should be interpreted and he responds with “Everything in the Bible should be accepted, exactly as it is given there”(2.2.78). Here, Brady blatantly states that the bible should be known for what it
Many may believe that reading a book about religion would be challenging to accomplish for someone who is not religious. But those people have never read Anne Lamott’s, Traveling Mercies: Some Thoughts on Faith. If one were to ask non-religious college students to read a book by a random author about spirituality and “Finding God” through conversion, they would most likely roll their eyes and bear through it. In Lamott’s series of essays, one does not have to “suffer through the readings” because her writing style is one of a kind. She has strategically chosen every word because she is aware of how important her spiritual experiences are to so many people, religious or not.
After a twelve-hour interrogation, Brenton Butler confessed to the murder of Mary Ann Stephens. A key claim made by the defense attorneys in this case was that this was a false confession, and after reaching a verdict of not guilty, the jury clearly agreed. The factors that led the false confession were laid out in a scene during the documentary. Instead of using the interview to discover the truth, the interrogators specifically sought out a confession from the suspect. They began the interrogation with the presumption that Brenton Butler was guilty.
Therefore, people should not have to prove their innocence. In the play there have been many situation that concluded with no solutions that lead the character to betray their own belief. For example, in act one Tituba confessed to working with the devil to prove that she didn’t want to be a witch anymore.
Finding Justification for Injustice What politician hasn’t used religion as an unwavering piece of justification in an argument? All throughout history, politicians have used religion countless times to justify behavior or simply to avoid unflattering questions. Authors and characters are guilty of this as well. “The Crucible” and “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” include evidence that individuals use religion as justification to prey on other’s fears and insecurities, to use as evidence to explain an occurrence or phenomenon, or to pass judgement on another person because Miller wishes to shed light on the manipulation of ideas and religion, and Edwards wishes to persuade his audience through these tactics.
“Truth is always the strongest argument.” Is a famous Sophocles quote. Which fits very well with the theme of this story. In Red Kayak, Brady is a student who uncovers a secret about the sinking of the D'angelo's kayak. So, Brady must make the decision to help his friends, or do the right thing and tell someone.
Shouts of faith are not to be taken lightly. By comparing the two, the
In Lara Buchak’s essay, Can It Be Rational to Have Faith? , she asserts that everyday faith statements and religious faith statements share the same attributes. She later states that in order to truly have faith, a person ceases to search for more evidence for their claim, and that having faith can be rational. Although she makes compelling arguments in favor of faith in God, this essay is more hearsay and assumption than actual fact. In this paper, you will see that looking for further evidence would constitute not having faith, but that having faith, at least in the religious sense, is irrational.
In his memoir, Where the Wind Leads, Vinh Chung demonstrates the theme that times of despair and hardship will eventually pass, but it is the motivation to succeed which will make that time fruitful. While relaying the story of his family’s past, Chung gives an overall theme of success and prosperity which accompanies the distress and conflict brought about by the encompassing Vietnam War. As Chung stated, “[W]hat I do know is that the same pressure that can crush coal into dust can also turn carbon into diamond . . . Tough times produce tough people” (14). Though this theme of success can be grounded in one’s desire to prosper, Chung shows a deeper desire from which this success stems.

He says, "We often read of the fury of God" (Edwards 201), "How awful are those words, Isaiah 63:3, which are the words of the great God" (Edwards 202), and quotes other scriptures in order to illustrate his point. Once again, he justifies his arguments by relying upon the word of God (scripture) and his own authority to interpret those
Brady is one of the most charitable players in the league. Hosting many events, and donating to various charities, Tom Brady has a huge heart, along with a huge will-power. Which brings me to his next admirable quality. Tom Brady has great perseverance, and will to achieve. Overcoming many adversities, he is used to never quitting until he wins.
John Scopes influenced changed the teaching in our society's education. In schools today they can teach about evolution, but not about the Bible. In the mid-1930s, after the John Scopes Trial talk died down textbooks started teaching about evolution (Boundless 6). "The tension that gave the Scopes Trial worldwide recognition continues to rise questions some seventy-five years later, and these questions have no easy answers. We can be assured that in this new century the voices of the Scopes Trial will continue to be heard" (Hanson 108).
Individuals experience a system of beliefs, whether it is through an organized religion, or a personal faith. Conspiracies arise between the two organizations, with regards to organized religion taking away from the true meaning of faith. Although many argue that the two are on different ends of a spectrum, it is also believed that personal faith is crucial in being apart of an organized religion. It is argued that the systematic format of organized religion is said to take away the freedom one experiences when following a personal faith. Throughout the novel, A Prayer for Owen Meany, by John Irving, the two protagonists, John Wheelwright and Owen Meany, discuss how organized religion masks the essence of religious faith, how it prevents an

Personally, I believe in the message Brady was trying to convey and send to the masses.
