Inherit the Wind by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee, portrays many characters to be extremely religious. Religion in the town of Hillsboro is a vital element in its daily life. One day a teacher by the name of Bert Cates teaches Charles Darwin´s theory of evolution to his class, which teachings go against the Bible. Matthew Harrison Brady, a famous politician, comes to town to defend the Bible in the name of God by prosecuting Bert Cates, who is assumed to be an evolutionist, to prove to the world that Christianity isn’t a force to be taken lightly with. However, a infamous defense attorney named Henry Drummond stands in Brady’s way. When Drummond question´s Brady, Drummond asks him if he can be called as an authority on the Bible and Brady responds with ¨There are many portions of the Bible that I have committed to memory¨(2.2.76). While extracting this quote, we can observe that Brady admits to committing memory to the Bible in front of the courthouse during a monumental case in all of Hillsboro history. To admit this in front of countless numbers of people, he must have been very confident in his memorization. Individuals on the witness bench are asked to take an oath stating that he or she will tell the truth and nothing else thus it is extremely unlikely for Brady to be lying. During the beginning of his visit to Hillsboro he delivers a speech to the citizens. He annunciates “I am here to defend that which is most precious in the hearts of all of us: the Living Truth of the Scriptures”(1.1.18)! In his speech, he expresses devotion to Christianity by traveling all the way to Hillsboro from his own home just to persecute one person, Bert Cates. By prosecuting Bert Cates, a teacher who broke a law regarding religion by teaching evolution, he is defending the Bible while at the same time showing the world that going against the teachings of Jesus Christ has dire consequences. He states that the living truth of the scriptures is what is most precious in the hearts of all of them which indicates that the Bible is precious enough for him, a extremely well known public figure such as himself to defend rather than another prosecutor.
