Guntly Guntly 2The Tragic Injustices Within the Cruel World of King Lear There is usually a fine balance between justices and injustices in the world. However, in Shakespeare 's King Lear there is no balance between the two. There is very little justice and an abundance of injustice, most of it directly affecting King Lear. There is more injustice than justice in Shakespeare 's King Lear developing from Lear 's poor judgment and excessive pride, which returns to punish Lear properly for his unjust sins. One plot involves Lear and the second involves Gloucester.41 The story of Edgar, Edmund, and Gloucester is included in the play to develop a comparison to Lear and his behavior. The situation of Gloucester and his sons presented in the beginning of the play works out any consequences, in this case "disunity and disruption," within the first parts of King Lear.42 Eyesight has some symbolic meaning in the meaning behind characters in the play. Even though Gloucester loses his physical eyesight, Lear is morally blinder than Gloucester.43 Downfall is a second theme in King Lear. This theme can be considered the "decay and fall of the world."44 In the play, downfall is most commonly either suffering or torment. In the case of King Lear, that suffering is caused by the injustices acted out by chat ethers against one another. Lear loses his sanity, Kent is put into the stocks, and Gloucester has his eyes gouged out and attempts suicide. This downfall takes many aspects into consideration. It is at the same time "spiritual and physical," while also affecting social aspects.45 Madness is a third, minor theme hidden in the characters of the play.
