“No one can make you feel inferior without your consent” (Eleanor Roosevelt). In the novel, “The Sun Also Rises”, Ernest Hemingway’s character Jake feels inferior to everyone and everything he is surrounded by. This relates to the theme is the male insecurities. Throughout the novel male insecurities are shown multiple times in many different ways. He uses people along with the environment to demonstrate. He describes Cohn as a wealthy jewish boxer who was great at what he did, even football. Throughout this novel we find Jake attempting to be with brett but never succeeding. Jake is a successful person and has more than any other character in the book. At one point during the novel Jake walks into a bar with a prostitute but never does anything with her. He kind of just wanted to talk with her in the bar. When Brett walks in he eaves the prostitute and goes home with Brett and kisses her goodnight but never goes in. This is when we find out that she loves him but never whats to be with him because he cannot physically love a woman. Jake was in WW1 and was injured in a way that he cannot have sex. This makes Jake feel like less of a man and after this everything points to him be inferior. Jake resorts to alcohol during the book to put all his misery behind him. During a fishing trip they take, Hemingway mentions the water multiple times. Water is a symbol of relief and new life but during the trip his friend catches bigger fish than Jake which points back to him feeling inferior.
The whole book is based on a love triangle where the main character Jake wants to be with Brett and loves her but Brett does not want Jake back. She says that she loves him that loves him. He wishes that he was able to have what Robert has and when he sees robert just throwing it all away it genuinely upsets

The main character, Holling Hoodhood, has hate instead of friendship surrounding him. His teacher, his family, and his classmates are all mean to him. Later on, his teacher and another adult, Mr. Goldman, start to behave nicely towards Holling. After this, some of his classmates develop ties to Holling. Danny Hupfer gives a baseball back to Mickey Mantle after the star is rude to Holling.
This is shown by the line “This was Brett that I had felt like crying about. Then I thought of her walking up the street and stepping into the car, as I had last seen her, and of course in a little while I felt like hell again. It is awfully easy to be hard-boiled about everything in the daytime, but at night is another thing.” This line serves as evidence that Jake is aware that Brett does not love him but feels the intense pressure to please Brett. When Brett leaves, he becomes miserable as he knows he will always fail to please Brett and other women.
In the following books each of the main characters is looking for the meaning in their own lives: The Catcher in the Rye, Into the Wild, In Cold Blood, and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. These books show that each character have different meanings to their lives and they want to find out what it is. Holden Caulfield learned that you might not be able to help every single person in this world but those that you can help or give advice to makes a bigger impact on the world that anyone could imagine. Chris McCandless was brought into this world so people can understand that no matter where you come from, no matter how hard or not your life is, sometimes living life simply is how to get through it. The characters Dick, Perry, Herb, Nancy, and the rest of the Clutters we here so people question where the lines of criminals and the mentally disabled cross and end.
The novel started off portraying Craig as someone who does not apprehend the point of living. Typically, he wondered “Who are we living for?” and “What are we here to do?” way too often. Craig Gilner is a depressed teenager, an art-loving nerd, and a person who just longs to know why certain affairs happen the way they do.
As they spend the day together, they begin to realize their flaws and how much alike they are. The character I will focus on is Andrew Clark. He is a jock, the athlete on the wrestling team. He seems to enjoy his status as an athlete and has a high self-esteem because of that status. Andrew seems to feel like he needs to protect everyone but is hot-tempered.
With this in mind for the rest of the novel, Cohn’s jealousy explodes, resulting in an attack on Jake and Mike near the end of the book. Brett’s irresistible nature makes the men lose control. This control, in turn, makes Brett more powerful, while the men become weaker, letting a woman take over the consciousness. Brett’s
Hemingway leads his readers to make the inference that Jake is the opposite of an open book, based on this thoughts and speech. The readers would make this inference for many reasons, One of them being that he speaks to others in extremely short sentences, which makes him appear apathetic or shy. When he’s alone, he can’t stop thinking, stream-of-consciousness, or talking with Brett if she’s with him. Jake puts on an act to others to make it seem like he doesn’t care, but in actuality, he does - a
The struggles presented between these two characters bring to light issues in human relationships that weigh into everyday life. Hemingway’s short story reveals to readers how relationships affect communication, decision
They begin discussing the old man’s attempt at suicide. The story which seems to start off about the old man really becomes about the fear the old waiter has of becoming like the old man. The importance of the characters, setting, and symbolism of the story all help Hemingway to express the hopelessness and loneliness of the old man and the older waiter. The story’s characters consist of the young waiter who is confident but seems to be a bit naïve about what life is really about.
Ernest Hemingway’s characters are frequently tested in their faith, beliefs, and ideas. To Hemingway’s characters, things that appear to be grounded in reality and unmovable facts frequently are not, revealing themselves to be hollow, personal mythologies. Hemingway shakes his characters out of their comfortable ignorance through traumatic events that usually cause a certain sense of disillusionment with characters mythologies, moving them to change their way of life. His characters usually, after becoming disillusioned, respond with depression, suicide, and nihilism. However, this is not always the case.
Jake grew away from his faith because he was angry with God for his injury from the war and has a hard time accepting that God would let this happen to him. In this scene, Hemingway shows how religion is corrupt when one can be part of the faith and be associated with its morality even if they still do not exercise it currently. This theme is thus developed by the
“Hills Like White Elephants” may be a short story about two people just talking in a bar of a station, but behind every word Hemingway uses lies a deeper meaning. It is necessary to point out that omitting further information is something that is typical to Hemingway’s writing style. The reader has to contemplate what the author wants to portray in his story in the first place. Although the author probably had one meaning in mind, the metaphors can be interpreted in many ways. While reading the story, what came up to my mind was whether the author’s personal life had to do something with it or not.
America is built upon the ideal that every citizen has an equal opportunity to success and prosperity through hard work and dedication. This is also known as the American dream. Many authors have speculated what is most important in grasping the American dream and through reading these stories it can be determined that success, happiness, and freedoms all play an important role in attaining the American dream. The American dream is historically unique because everyone American has the right to it.
