How does a person go about explaining a difficult topic? For some people, they can look at a movie to help explain. Along the lines of mental health and illness, the movie Inside Out helps give some insight into what it means and what some conditions can look like for some people, for example, depression and bipolar disorder. Inside Out is about an 11-year-old girl named Riley who has had her life uprooted because of the new job that her dad has taken in San Francisco. The movie follows the journey of Riley and the five emotions that live in her head. During the journey, adjustment disorder plays a key role in how Riley deals with her emotions and the sudden change in lifestyle.

Some common signs of bipolar disorder include talking at a rapid rate, racing thoughts, or the feeling of not having control. Bipolar disorder can be seen as having mood swings that change from excited highs (manic) to devastating lows (depression). The example that Inside Out shows is when Riley was introducing herself to the class and Sadness touches memory and Riley starts to cry. Then the core memories are taken out. The sudden change in her mood is an example of how bipolar works in a sense. There are three kinds of bipolar disorder. Bipolar 1 disorder, bipolar 2 disorder, and cyclothymic disorder. Bipolar I show up in the form of manic episodes and lasts at least two weeks. This type of disorder can include but is not limited to, abnormal behavior that can lead to disputes in life. Bipolar 2 is more likely to experience depressive episodes. The manic episode that will be present will be hypomanic, or milder. Cyclothymic disorder is the combination of hypomanic and depressive symptoms, but this disorder does not meet the requirements for a depressive or manic episode. As the other emotions try to fill the void that is left when there is no joy, there are mood changes in Riley that are shown throughout the time that Sadness and Joy are away from headquarters. Inside Out shows us even the sadness inside of us does not have much of an effect. Riley does not get affected until Sadness and Joy get lost with Joy and becomes sadder than that when Riley starts to show signs of depression. The thought of depression that most people think of is feelings and emotions. In Inside Out, one of the effects of adjustment disorder shown in the movie is when Sadness makes memories that once brought happiness now bring a sense of sadness because of Sadness touching them. When asked why Sadness is making Riley sad, she does not want to but cannot help it, and the other emotions do not understand.
