Intelligence can be found in many different forms such as, books, people, words, movies, thoughts, etc. Anyone can inhabit intelligence, whether one choses to find it depends solely on their perspective. “Sometimes a change of perspective is all it takes to see the light.” ~ Dan Brown. Chaim Potok does an excellent job on providing intelligence and different perspectives on intelligence within his characters. The usage of intelligence can make or break a person, if they use it modestly like David Malter respect is easily gained. However, if one like Danny Saunders starts to use intelligence as a bragging right, respect could be lost. The Chosen gives amazing insights into the characters lives while still giving a mysterious appearance. Intelligence
“Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a harder battle.” ~Plato. In The Chosen by Chaim Potok, every character fights their own battle, whether large or small. Few characters in this novel show compassion towards other ’s suffering with more difficult struggles.
Allen Mangan Section 11 Ms. Cara Dees 10-1-14 Explanatory Synthesis What does it mean to be truly intelligent? Is intelligence simply book smarts, an understanding of facts, or the ability to graduate with honors from a prestigious university? Or is intelligence something much deeper and personal? Authors David Foster Wallace and Mike Rose both address the topic of intelligence in their writing, and they speak to this very question.
Importance of Wisdom In Chaim Potok’s The Chosen, many characters display their wisdom, especially Reb Saunders, Mr. Malter, and Mr. Galanter. Reb Saunders, Danny’s father, shows great wisdom when he must react to other people’s opinions and views. Mr. Malter, who has the same job and position as Reb Saunders but studies a different view of the religion, displays the same kind of wisdom towards other religions or beliefs contradictory to his. Mr. Galanter, the baseball coach of Mr. Malter’s son, Reuven, makes wise choices in directing and encouraging his team to work hard and play well.
Many amazing and well fleshed out characters are in The Chosen by Chaim Potok. One of the most prominent and important characters is Danny Saunders. When Danny is introduced he is made out to be arrogant, mean-spirited, and an elitist. However, when Reuven talks to him he realizes that he is actually just a brilliant, inquisitive, and shelter kid. Danny’s most prominent trait is his brilliance.
In Chaim Potok’s novel, The Chosen, Reb Saunders, who is Danny’s father, is a very interesting and wise man. His techniques and beliefs for raising his son is strange and unorthodox but it is what he believes will help grow his son’s soul. He is not your typical father and being Jewish plays a role in his decisions. In the book we see how his actions are used and end with fruitful results. Reb Saunders grew up in a “small town in southern Russia” and was raised in the Jewish Orthodox customs.
He was born a brilliant boy and carried that attitude through his life. Mr. Malter compared his brilliancy to a wise Hassidic man saying, “Reb Saunders’ son has a mind like
The Qualities of a Scholar In Chaim Potok’s The Chosen, many great characters exist. The book covers Jewish life across different branches of the religion in America. The characters in this book all face their own challenges, and often times encounter them together. The main protagonist, Reuven Malter, stands out from the other characters in the book because of his success as a student.
The Importance of Respect In Chaim Potok’s The Chosen, Reuven Malter, Danny, and Reb Saunders are three distinct characters that display their amazing, God-given characteristic of respect towards not only their family but also close friends. “Show respect even to those who don’t deserve it; not as a reflection of their character, but as a reflection of yours.” (Dave Willis) Derived from this quote is a good challenger and motivator to people of all religions to show respect and gratitude towards people who might not even deserve it.
Education Demonstrated in The Chosen Education is the key to success. One important theme in the novel The Chosen by Chaim Potok is education. The theme education exists in the novel through the characters Daniel Saunders and Reuven Malter. Some specific examples in the book are when Reb Saunders threatens Danny's education, Reuven's knowledge for math, and when Danny and Reuven discuss college. The first point that will be discussed is how the theme of education is shown through Danny.
Intelligence is what gets us by everyday; it gets us jobs and helps to provide for ourselves and others. I'm not saying you need to be the smartest person ever to be successful, but you at least have to be smart enough. Gladwell mentions that "Langan’s IQ is 30 percent higher than Einstein’s. But that doesn’t mean Langan is 30 percent smarter than Einstein. That’s ridiculous.
The Chosen was written to show the value of friendship and it’s overbearing force on those it affects. The main characters, Reuven Malter and Danny Saunders are near-opposites. They have contrasting interests, as well as beliefs. This is trumped by the friendship that grows despite their differences. Their friendship was solely built because Danny wanted to “understand why he wanted to kill Reuven” (Potok 66).
Concerning Characters Concern ranks in the top of characteristics for a true friend to have. People with this quality care more for others. The Bible says “That there should be no schism in the body: but that the members should have the same care one for another. ”(1 Corinthians 12:25).
What do you think it means to be intelligent? Being intelligent means having self-awareness and understanding, using logic and critical thinking, and having the ability to learn. This is shown in the novel by Delia Owens, Where the Crawdads Sing, John Stienbecks novella, Of Mice and Men, and Richard Connell’s fictional short story, “The Most Dangerous Game”. In the book Where the Crawdads Sing, Kya uses her intelligence all throughout her life to survive on her own in the marsh.
Intellectual development is how one learns, the seven IQ’s. The seven IQ’s are, words smart, number smart, picture smart, body smart, sound and rhythm smart, people smart and self smart. Out of the seven IQ’s I believe Simon is word smart, people smart and self smart. I think he is these smarts because of the following example in the movie.
WHAT IS INTELLIGENCE? There has been many debates as well as
