INSIGHT – THE FUNDAMENTSALS OF INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE. The fundamentals of Interior Architecture is an interesting book published in 2007 which summarizes the essential elements used to create aesthetically appealing and practically appropriate Interior Architecture. The fundamentals of Interior Architecture is written by John Coles and Naomi House. John Coles has done diploma in Architecture and was previously a Programme leader of Interior Design MA and Sustainable Design MA in Middlesex University, UK. Naomi House is a highly Experienced Interior Design, Educator and writer. Like john Coles she also taught in Middlesex University where she was a Programme leader of Interior and Architecture. The first section of the book explores the SPACE/form which explains the sense of the place and building reuse which is an essential aspect of design. It further talks about the elements and composition of the interior space explaining the plane, scale, proportion, vista – linking internal and external spaces, movement, transition and accessibility. Hence this helps to understand the transformation and reuse of the space, the role of external elements in the composition of the space, the use of walls/ floors/ceiling, perceiving our self within the space and movement with space as well as between interior and exterior space. It further explains the SITE/function talking about analyzing the site, the position/history/building typology/orientation/structures/services of the site. It explores the types of interiors - Retail spaces, Work spaces, Living spaces, Public spaces, Restorative Spaces, Transient Spaces. This helps us to understand the history and environment surroundings affecting the space, the methods of constructions that can be used, incorporation of heating, water, drainage, gas etc. and the factors affecting the types of spaces interior architect needs to work
