What is courage? The dictionary defines it as, “the ability to do something that frightens one”. But the belief that someone is doing something to frighten another seems inaccurate. We’ve all grown up knowing courage as an intangible fire that only comes from within and it helps guide you when you’re feeling doubtful or scared. This type of true courage is displayed by Piggy from the novel, Lord of the Flies, Martin Luther King Jr. in his Letter from Birmingham Jail and Tim O'Brien in the short story, On the Rainy River. Whether it’s standing up for equal rights or laying down your life, courage is finding all your bravery and unleashing it on any challenge that steps in your way.
Tim O'Brien describes courage as something that comes and goes. “ Courage, I seemed to think, comes to us in finite quantities, like an inheritance, and by being frugal and stashing it away and letting it earn interest, we suddenly increase our moral capital in preparation for the day when the account must be down. It was comforting theory (O’Brien, 38)”. Also, “it offered hope and grace to the repetitive coward: it justified the
The characters in this novel establishes various viewpoints of courage. The novel states “it's when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyways and you see it through no matter what”(Lee 149). That specific quote that Lee puts in the book essentially means that you will infrequently win, but sometimes you will. The book also implies that “die beholden to nothing and no one”(Lee 149).
Courage is found by Boo Radley when he stabs Bob Ewell to save the kids. He had enough courage to come out of his home to save people he doesn't know. Courage is not just about saving people it can be about asking someone out on a date or doing stunts. It can also be about what you believe. For example, Boo Radley believes that people
Most literary stories follow a journey pattern either from childhood to adulthood or ignorance to knowledge. Some stories go into depth and demonstrate a lesson within the voyage. A lesson such as not to give to much power to others over yourself; two works that exemplify this type of less are The Great Gatsby and The Wizard of Oz. Both The Great Gatsby and The Wizard of Oz emphasize a character’s journey from ignorance of the meaning of hope to knowledge of the dangers of empowering others over yourself.
“ To Kill a Mockingbird” is a story about a county in Alabama in the 1930’s, drawing attention to the the different social classes in the South and the racism that occurred during that time. Characters in difficult situations unexpectedly showing courage is one of the major themes in this book, and is shown through many of the actions that people take in this story. In the book, the word courage can be defined as the ability to withstand hatred and judgement with a high head and a grateful heart. This book has many courageous characters, including but not limited to Atticus Finch, Reverend Sykes, Boo Radley, and Dolphus Raymond.
When Jean Houston, visionary leader and teacher, asked Oprah this question she was referring to "the hero's journey," the concept that has been the ongoing theme in all the greatest stories and myths ever told throughout history. In particular, she was referring to Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, another one of my all time favorite movies. Even as a child I felt that it was so much more than just a children's fairy-tale. I've always felt a deep spiritual message within it, which is why Dorothy's last line in the movie makes me cry - Every single time that I watch it.
The central idea of To Kill A Mockingbird is Bravery. A quote used in the story that Harper Lee uses to show this central idea is “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view” (30/34). This quote shows how some people can be brave. Many of the characters in the story were brave but the three i'm going to focus on are Atticus, Jem, and Arthur also known as “Boo”.
Scarecrow has no brain but manages to solve most major problems in the story. "Here is a great tree, standing close to the ditch. If the Tin Woodman can chop it down, so that it will fall to the other side, we can walk across it easily" (Baum 41). This citation shows that Scarecrow has the ability to solve problems and come up with great ideas without the need of a brain. This is something that nobody in their group could think of, not even Dorothy, so it's ironic that someone like Scarecrow, who does not have a brain, came up with such a great idea. The Scarecrow solves numerous major conflicts like this one throughout the story even though he supposedly does not have a brain.
Dubose, a character from To Kill A Mockingbird, shows true courage in a fictional account. In the book, by Harper Lee, Mrs Dubose is an older lady with a morphine addiction. She shows true courage by ending her addiction even though she knows that she will most likely suffer in the end. From this story, courage is defined as doing something when you know there is a slim chance of succeeding. Courage is also defined by another character. Atticus is a lawyer and father in To Kill A Mockingbird. In the story he is talking to his kids and says “I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin, but you begin anyway. You rarely win, but sometimes you do. Mrs. Dubose won, all ninety-eight pounds of her” (Lee 149). This relates to the idea that courage is doing something before you know you will succeed when he says “you’re licked before you begin, but you begin anyway” (Lee 149). It also relates to Rosa Parks’ story because she said “No” to the bus driver when she knew she most likely wouldn’t
Courage has a meaning to everyone in their own way. And many have shown it in some sort of way. Either from standing up for someone or standing up for yourself. Too going out and playing a game knowing you’re going to lose.
Courage. A hero. Cowardice. Fear. A meager mouse makes your blood run cold. Courage can is said to be a hero’s trait and the key to success. Cowardice is the antagonist, nobody likes it, nobody wishes to be it. And so, in To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, cowardice and courage are thundering aspects of the book, displayed by two major characters; Atticus Finch and Bob Ewell.
Scout, the narrator, is the most obvious example of courage. Throughout the novel she personifies a childlike nature, adventurous, curious and courageous. Scout defends her brother against Bob Ewell; although the identity of the attacker was unknown to her at the time, without a second thought, even though she couldn’t see in the dark. Likewise she easily
In the novel, “To Kill a Mockingbird,” Atticus Finch is a well reserved, honored, and honest man ;by contrast, Bob Ewell is a racist, cantankerous, and evil man. Atticus Finch once said, “I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand.”
"Inside each of us, there is a seed of both good and evil. It's a constant struggle to see which one will win. And one cannot exist without the other (Eric Burdon)." In the book To Kill A Mockingbird there are a few characters in there that symbolizes a mockingbird. A mockingbird is someone who does not harm anyone or anything and creates pleasure for others to enjoy. Like Jem, he would be considered a mockingbird maybe not right from the start but as he slowly starts to mature he becomes one. Also Tom Robinson and Boo Radley are one when all they wanted to do was help.
