As a professional nurse, my work environment plays a role in helping me move up the ladder of my career, sharpening my leadership skills and polishing my decision-making skills. My work environment equally helps me create a foundation for flourishing my career by identifying areas I need to improve. A healthy work environment encourages teamwork and supports employee development. In conclusion, Nurses ought to apply to the principles of the practice through ensuring they make decisions that are ethical and ensuring patient safety. The legal and ethical standards of nursing practice should aim at patient needs and satisfaction.
Nurses who are professional show and embrace accountability for their actions (Nursing and Midwifery Council UK, 2017). Professional nursing practice is important as it aids to maintain high standards in the clinical area (Hutchinson, D. 2017). If professionalism was not shown in nursing practice, it would lead to many issues. Professionalism can be shown by nurses giving patients autonomy which is a major characteristic of professionalism (R.G. Boss).
However, I am aware that the beginning of effective leadership would be by developing a vision of the organization where a nurse leader serves. Coming up with a picture of what would be a future of excellence in delivering nursing care in the organization would be crucial in motivating and raising commitment among the other nurses. As a nurse leader, the vision that I would hold dear would be to ensure I have the capacity to make sure that the systems in place benefit individual needs of the patients in a manner that patients are always handled with respect and dignity while the work that nurses perform is respected and valued. For this to be met, there is a need for the nurse leader to assist the other nurses grasp the envisioned picture and remaining at the forefront in directing the others on where to go. Subsequently, I would want to be the kind of a nurse leader who can enable the staff to grasp the vision, to make sure the appropriate people assume the nursing roles and to model the behaviors that are desired of the other
It also clarifies nursing values and development and allows for accountability. It involves patients in co-ordinated nursing care (Feo and Kitson, 2016). The Roper, Logan and Tierney model helps nurses to focus on patient care by following the fundamental rights of maintaining independence of the ADL’s without diminishing dignity. Recognising that their knowledge, attitudes and behaviour may be influenced by biological, psychological, sociocultural, environmental and politico-economic factors and respecting their decisions in such. Overcoming and preventing illness to maintain independence is the nurses key focus in delivering patient care which follows the direction of the RLT model of nursing (Roper, Logan and Tierney, 2001).
