The internet is a powerful tool, but it can also expose children and young people to unsuitable sites and potential harm. Sometimes, this technology which is supposed to be an informative and educational platform from where children can play, learn, create and connect, opening a whole world of exciting possibilities puts them at a risk, threating their safety and welfare. Nowadays, the internet is more commonly used by children and young people making them vulnerable online. They should be made aware about the possible dangers of using the internet, including the ones from social networking sites. Many children and young people have access to the use of a mobile phone and the benefits of being able to communicate with them can be a matter of great reassurance to parents. However, mobile phones can also be an instrument for cyber-bullying, and this has caused a great deal of distress for many young people and their parents. At home, parents and caregivers need to make sure that, kids of all ages, have all the required privacy settings on and to their highest level whenever using online devices. We need to educate them: -
• not to share any personal information like family details, pictures, home or school address, email address or mobile number.
• to be careful before posting photos and videos that can be used illegally.
• to avoid befriending or meeting strangers through the internet or even if they do know them personally, inform your parents about it.
