Reflection on Internship and Analysis of Experience During the internship, I faced some difficulties, such as getting used to working on shift and some analysts who were unwilling to take responsibility for my work. Firstly, as the samples can come at any hour of the day, it is required for the analysts to work on shift. Each shift lasts for 12 hours, and depending on the schedule it is either day or night shift. Personally, I have not thought of how long 12 hours could be until I started shift work. It was difficult at first to adjust to the shift timing, because of the changes in lifestyle. As the internship takes place in a real working environment, the job of a lab analyst can be observed first-hand. I found that although an analyst’s job is quite repetitive in terms of the tests that they had to run daily, the amount of samples that had to be tested differed from day to day. I also found out that an analyst’s job is very stressful, because of the unpredictable number of samples that could be sent in, and that there were many duties that they had to do, on top of the testing. In addition, I have learnt that in a workplace it is important to maintain a good relationship with the colleagues, as failing to do so will give rise to the emergence of office politics. Office politics is one situation that will cause the internal structure of the workplace to start breaking down, and thus should be avoided as far as possible. As for other things that I had wished to learn, the links between the tests required for a particular type of oil and its applications is one of the things that I wanted to find out. It would be better if an intern doing a chemical engineering course is able to draw the link between the two because it could be useful not only during the course, but also after the course in a career of the same
