Reflection on Internship and Analysis of Experience During the internship, I faced some difficulties, such as getting used to working on shift and some analysts who were unwilling to take responsibility for my work. Firstly, as the samples can come at any hour of the day, it is required for the analysts to work on shift. Each shift lasts for 12 hours, and depending on the schedule it is either day or night shift. Personally, I have not thought of how long 12 hours could be until I started shift work. It was difficult at first to adjust to the shift timing, because of the changes in lifestyle. As the internship takes place in a real working environment, the job of a lab analyst can be observed first-hand. I found that although an analyst’s job is quite repetitive in terms of the tests that they had to run daily, the amount of samples that had to be tested differed from day to day. I also found out that an analyst’s job is very stressful, because of the unpredictable number of samples that could be sent in, and that there were many duties that they had to do, on top of the testing. In addition, I have learnt that in a workplace it is important to maintain a good relationship with the colleagues, as failing to do so will give rise to the emergence of office politics. Office politics is one situation that will cause the internal structure of the workplace to start breaking down, and thus should be avoided as far as possible. As for other things that I had wished to learn, the links between the tests required for a particular type of oil and its applications is one of the things that I wanted to find out. It would be better if an intern doing a chemical engineering course is able to draw the link between the two because it could be useful not only during the course, but also after the course in a career of the same

Leadership activities such as mentoring, tutoring, and leading minority incentives have taught me the value of being an attentive listener and also how to teach a variety of learners. Research training conducted at the University of Florida, Malone and Brown University has developed an attitude of commitment and independence. Lastly, being a student has instilled the value of dedication, strategic planning, persistence, and commitment. Additionally, clinical experience has emphasized the importance of details, proper documentation, consistency, problem solving and team-work. A few months ago, I began an internship with the East Villagers Organization. East Villagers is a non-profit organization that focuses primarily on funding children with congenital heart disease. As an intern, I was required to translate documents from Mandarin to English since the organization focused its projects in Eastern China. The first assignment given to me was a fourteen pages brochure that I had to translate within two weeks. Since this was one of the first times I was given such an enormous task within such a small time span, I panicked.
I am applying to be considered for the graduate assistantship. I am currently working as a Resident Assistant (RA) for Grand Valley State University housing; I started working as an RA since August 2014. I have to be responsible and on call for more than 1000 students from different cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. The Counselling Centre, the police department, and housing department in GVSU trained me to deal with crisis such as sexual assaults, suicide ideation and attempts, drinking, social justice issues, and roommate conflicts. Those trainings greatly helped me when I personally dealt with two residents who had motives to commit suicide.

By participating as an SIP intern, I hope to gain experience in the scientific field and to further my passion in science. When I am a working adult, I would be most happy spending my days in bioengineering. I highly enjoy delving into biology- I love the classes, reading its applications, and researching what the career is like. Thinking narrowly, participating as an SIP intern gives me a chance to spend my summer well.
Researchers theorize that shift work exerts adverse effects in nurse by disturbing circadian rhythms, sleep, and family and social life. Disturbances in circadian rhythms may lead to reductions in the length and quality of sleep and may increase fatigue and sleepiness, as well as gastrointestinal, psychological, and cardiovascular symptoms. In addition, working at unusual times may make it difficult to interact with family and maintain other social contacts. Similarly, long work hours may reduce the time available for sleep, leading to sleep deprivation or disturbed sleep and incomplete recovery from work. This may adversely affect nervous, cardiovascular, metabolic, and immune functioning.
Since I have many friends who are nurses, I know about the life of a nurse. Although they were working and caring for their patients, I could hear how hard they work. As Madelyn said, “Nurses work four days a week for 12-hours shifts.” As one may guess a 12-hour shift is not exactly 12 hours, but 12-hours shifts are usually 14-hour. I know that sometimes nurses may find themselves putting in overtime or being called in when staffing is short.
