Within “Thank You for Arguing What Aristotle, Lincoln, and Homer Simpson Can Teach us About the Art of Persuasion,” Jay Heinrichs, a skilled editor, and author with a long history of rhetoric delineates a very educational lesson over the power of persuasive writing or speaking in order to interact with the world around us. He accomplishes this by lucidly describing the steps to become a powerful persuader. My favorite chapter is chapter 7, which proves, to me, that this book should continue to be used in schools. Heinrichs organizes the book by explaining the skill then recounting an anecdote to help further explain when and how the strategy is most useful.

In business as in life, one needs to develop skills to be more effective. Interpersonal skills useful to facilitate a successful career in business include listening, assertiveness, negotiation, feedback, persuasion, interviewing, and coaching. The following contains a brief explanation of each skill, how the skill is useful in a business setting, and a website to expand your knowledge of the skill. Listening skills, more specifically active listening is one of the best skills to develop in business.
Skills such as strong customer service, exceptional interpersonal skills, attention to detail, efficient time management, working well under pressure, excelling in a fast paced environment, anticipating guests needs, patience, and being a team player. Case in point, my job as a server revolved almost entirely around talking, listening, and interacting with a diversity of people. This constant interaction taught me the importance of not only verbal communication but more importantly, non-verbal communication. Over the years, I perfected the ability to “read people like a book”. I could decipher a guests dining experience by only analyzing their facial expressions or body language.

Interpersonal listening: is the power to interpret things and to make healthy communication. Listening can prevent unnecessary mistakes. That is why people say, before you talk, think twice.
Interpersonal skills are the skills we use every day when we communicate and interact with other people, both individually and in groups. People with strong interpersonal skills are often more successful in both their professional and personal lives, therefore developing these skills will definitely benefit me in the near future. Interpersonal skills include a wide variety of skills, however many are centered around communication, such as listening, questioning and understanding body language. These skills came into effect when I had to be an effective listener and listen to the concerns of the tutee and reflect those back. If I didn't do this then the conversational aspect of the session would have degraded into a teacher-student relationship.
