Chris McCandless was a young man who had a lot going for him. He decided to end his schooling and get rid of his life by leaving his life behind and hitchhiking all the way to Alaska and living off the land up there. Unfortunately this story doesn’t have a happy ending. Chris McCandless dies in Alaska, he was found in August of 1992 by a moose hunter who had found him inside an old school bus that Chris was living in. Chris died from eating berries that were poisonous and wouldn’t allow him to digest food causing him to die of starvation. McCandless has many reasons for making that decision about leaving his life behind. Chris’s parents had a big impact on why he made this decision. He had many thoughts on his parents. He would call them “plastic people”. He didn't like the lifestyle they lived and did not want any part of it. His parents had a huge amount of money and wanted to let everyone know they had it. They would buy things and it seems like buy people to hid the truth that was going on, that people didn’t see. They cared more about what society thought even though it drove Chris apart from them. Chris at one point wrote a letter to his sister before his disappearance saying “I’m going to divorce them as my parents once and for all and never speak to either of those idiots again as long as I live.” (Into The Wild Summary, Cliff Notes, Chapter …show more content…
To other people things seemed perfect. Things weren't so “perfect” as you step foot into the McCandless household. There was lots of violence going on and although they didn’t have the hardest childhood, they had a roof over their heads, food to eat, school, things that when on when they were younger impacted Chris and the rest of his life. His dad would sometimes hit and choke his mother, often belting the kids and often assaulting them. Chris’s dad kept many secrets from Chris and his younger sister Carine. His dad had a whole other family that he had at the same time as he had Chris and Carine. Walt McCandless had 6 other children that he would split his time between. His mom knew the whole time and never said anything to Chris or Carine. With his father doing this it made him have so much anger and hate towards Walt. He didn’t even find out directly from his parents. He took a road trip and during this trip he stopped by his hometown to El Segundo, California. There is where he discovered the truth about his father. He never directly told his parents that he knew. He instead to keep it to himself and expresses his rage obliquely. Once his parents found out that he was done with them and had left, they hired a private investigator to try and find him. I feel like his parents are showing that they care a little too late. Chris made it impossible to find him, changing his name and going to great lengths to leave no traceable tracks.
5 Causes Of A Dysfunctional Family The author of “Into The Wild” John Krakauer shares part of the story of a young man named Chris McCandless about how he gave up everything to hitchhike to Alaska. The important question that people would ask is what made him leave everything to go to Alaska? John Krauer shared a bit of why Chris left which was due to family drama. Two decades later Carine McCandless, Chris's sister, wrote a book called “The Wild Truth'' to share the personal struggles she and Chris went through to find their own truth in different ways.
He lived in the wilderness for about three months, his body was discovered by a hunter looking for shelter, on September 6, 1992. “I think that Chris McCandless was bright and ignorant at the same time. He had no common sense, and he had no business going
Chris McCandless was never too thrilled over following and living by the rules his parent's imposed. He was always a rebel, following his parents' rules until he could escape to the wild. When they learned of their son's demise in Alaska, they were devastated at most parents would be. They didn't know that the last time they saw Chris, would be their last because of his intention to leave them. Upon Chris disappearing from their lives, they were angry but thought they would see him again.
The Ignorance of Chris McCandless One day Chris McCandless decided to forget his whole present life and throw it all away. I don’t see how he could be so comfortable running away into the wilderness in Alaska. I think he already had a good life and could of had a better life. Chris was a young educated man who graduated from Wilbert Tucker High School and Emory University. I think his main reason for deciding to leave was because of the way his parents treated him.
The Father-Son Relationship For both McCandless and Krakauer, the combination of trying to please a difficult-to-please father, resenting authority, and discovering their fathers’ own great failings leads to an almost insurmountable rift. Krakauer was able to forgive his father only once he was no longer the same man. McCandless died before he had the opportunity to grow out of his anger.
He’d successfully kept Jan Burres and Wayne Westerberg at arm’s length, flitting out of their lives before anything was expected of him. And now he’d slipped painlessly out of Ron Franz’s life as well,” every time someone tried to become close to him, he pushed him or her away. When Ronald Franz asked to adopt him, Chris told him that they would talk about it when he returns from Alaska. Chris’ problems with his father affected his ability to form new, close relationships, and ultimately sent him to his death.
Chris always hung out with himself and spent time by himself, he was good at everything he did, and never needed anybody's help. As Chris grew older, his friend stated that he was never seen with a girlfriend, and instead of going out to parties or bars, he would talk to homeless people about their lives and give advice along with food. And when he grew into an adult, Chris wrote a letter to Carine on page 64, explaining how he's going to divorce his parents: “I’m going to let them think that I’m “coming around to see their side of thing” and that our relationship is stabilizing. And then, once the time is right, with one abrupt, swift action I’m going to completely knock them out of my life.”. This letter likely also represents another reason for Chris'
Chris and his father never really got along. A man, a son, should always have his father there for him and talk to him, not be abusive towards him; this could have been a significant reason why he did what he wanted to do. On pg.6, in talking with Jim Gallian, Chris told him “he hadn't
Chris Mccandless Chris Mccandless was a bright young man, who graduated college. He was a hard worker, who was brave, and adventurous. His adventurous side took him on a journey into the wild as he hitchhiked his way to Alaska, where he planned to endure off the land. He met a bunch of people on his way who grew to care very deeply for him. When he left his home, he hurt his family, who did not know of his whereabouts till his end.
We have all made mistakes, for some they are small mistakes that do not impact anyone. For others, they are of mammoth proportions and have a preponderant impact on how people think, or say about them. In the book Into the Wild it tells about the journey of Chris McCandless who died in the Alaskan wilderness. Chris McCandless was definitely one of these people who made a big mistake. People around the globe have mixed feelings about this twentieth century adventurer.
He wanted full disconnect from the world, fully he didn't want no contact with anyone. “The fact that Chris never bothered to let his family, specifically his parents, know where he was when he was gone for two years” (Jessica Robbins, 2012) she says she doesn't believe he did it on purpose but i feel like he did, the fact he found the truth about his parents is when he felt like his parents now feel about having no clue to where he may be i think he wanted to make his parents feel some of the pain he's felt so he hides himself from the very start. For instance, in the movie you
Christopher McCandless, the protagonist of the novel and film Into The Wild by Jon Krakauer, is not your average guy. Driven by his minimalist ideals and hate for society, he challenged the status quo and embarked on a journey that eventually lead to his unforeseen demise. A tragic hero, defined by esteemed writer, Arthur Miller, is a literary character who makes an error of judgment or has a fatal flaw that, combined with fate and external forces, brings on tragedy. Christopher McCandless fulfills the role of Miller’s tragic hero due to the fact that his tragic flaw of minimalism and aversion towards society had lead him to his death.
Even though it can be seen that Chris does show some sort of affection toward Burres, he be annoyed of Jan’s constant concern about his family and if they knew anything about him. “I’d ask him, ‘Have you let you your people know what you’re up to? Does your mom know you’re going to Alaska? Does your dad know? But he’d never answer.
Both of these examples lead to the belief that Rohan’s and McCandless’s parents, more specifically their dad, were guilty for their children’s actions. To illustrate this, Krakauer states that “... all parties suffered terribly” due to Walt McCandless’s affair with Chris’s mother while he was still married to another woman (Krakauer 121). It can be said that McCandless’ father’s actions were selfish because he failed to acknowledge how his actions would impact his family’s future. Due to his failure to acknowledge the harmful effects on his family members, he was guilty for the actions McCandless took because it made McCandless only feel pain when he was with his parents. Not only this, but he went as far as to say that his parent’s behavior were “... irrational… oppressive… disrespectful and insulting” (Krakauer 64).
Chris McCandless sought a more fulfilling existence in Alaska(Callarman,2016). Chris Mccandless chose a solitary life to get away from his parents, they never understood what he wanted. He chose to give all of his money away to charity,he rid himself of everything that he had to set out on a worthless journey and die's later on. Do you think it was smart for him to do that? However that young man definitely had luck on his side, in the end he was bested by mother nature. I personally think Chris was in over his head with his actions, that’s why he died, if he would have had more self-control and outdoor experience he would have survived.
