Irish Immigration in America (1820-1920) Irish immigrants fled Ireland when the potato famine nearly wiped out all of its people. Most of the Irish that left Ireland did so as indentured servants, this meant they had to be slaves in America until the cost of their trip was completely paid for. Despite a challenging immigration, the Irish culture and heritage has become a staple on American culture since coming here.
