According to Richard Walker, an educational psychologist at Sydney University, data has proven that in countries where more time is spent on homework, students score in tests lowering rapidly. I have experienced this effect and sometimes when I get homework on a test night it will give me less time to study so I might not get as good as a grade. Studies show that kids grades will decrease if the test is on the same thing as the homework because you will remember the stuff that you did for homework because it is fresh in our head. So this proves that we need less
Kids should have little to no homework to reduce stress upon students in schools. The first example is homework causes stress. A Stanford researcher said in the article “Can too much homework make your child sick? His study finds 'clear connection ' between students ' stress and physical illness” He found students with good grades spent too much time on homework, which caused stress, physical problems, and to have social problems as well. If all this is caused by homework, why do we do it?
This needs to be changed because so many children miss out on school lessons that may be beneficial and when they do the make up work for it they don’t get the same learning experience. Adding extra time in the morning should be able to build up a child’s health and that can change the amount of nonattendance in school records drastically. There are many psychological effects of sleep deprivation in attendance such as that students will lack motivation to learn, anxiety levels will start to rise, and even depression will show up in some cases. Sleep is very important to put on a good performance in and out of the classroom and if students don’t have the right motives, they will not do their best. Fatigue from sleep only encourages their bodies to shut off, making more and more students feel sick, tired, ache, and hurt.
As homework is the leading cause of the lack of sleep teachers should evaluate how much work they assign a night. Additionally, Kim also explains the effect of sleep deprivation in students which can cause heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, and diabetes. Sleep also plays an important role in cognitive functions and consolidating memories. Without the correct amount of sleep, students’ risks of getting these type of diseases increases. Students need the
What do you mean by ‘too much’ you ask, well, experts say that after about 2 hours negative effects start to ensue upon the kids. Teachers give too much homework in schools, and the reasons why include the fact that homework has discouraged children from participating in extracurricular activities, leads to a lot more stress for the students, and can have negative implications, academically, instead of the desired positive ones. Homework takes up a lot of time. Sometimes teachers give up to 3 hours worth of homework in one night. Kids want time to have some fun as well, such as electronics, video games, books, and etcetera.
He argues that these assignments do not actually aid children’s learning and it steals all of their precious time. Continuing, he explains how parents should extend their child’s knowledge outside of school, rather than through homework. In contrast to Jones’ argument, homework does enhance children’s learning through the small amount of extra practice provided to help the students excel in school. Students benefit from homework through extra practice on subjects they do not fully comprehend in class. Jones believes “homework is just tedious” and repetition of a material only helps in math and reading.
One more reason why American students should receive less homework is that students who have a lot of homework, tend to get overwhelmed and they won 't even attempt to complete their work. Anne Michaud of Newsday makes an argument by saying, “Cutting back on homework can make the difference in whether some students even attempt the assignment” (84). This quote shows that assigning less homework can be a major factor to if the students make an attempt to complete the homework. Students can get very overwhelmed when facing endless homework and some of these students might not even attempt to complete the homework because there is too much. Cutting back on homework will make students less overwhelmed and more motivated to complete the homework.
A 2012 study done by Finley Edwards, a professor at the University of Baylor, discovered that middle school students who started a class hour later increased their standardized test scores by over two percent. Multiple studies have shown that sleep loss can mimic or enhance the symptoms of ADHD. The study also showed that students who sleep more are the ones with the better grades. And when school starts too early, teachers have to deal with kids who are having a hard time concentrating. The study also showed that the students who had trouble sleeping or who did not get enough sleep were twice as likely to fail at least one class.
They are complaining about the realistic value of homework. A lot of teachers are trying to say that the homework is helping practice the concepts of the lessons, but studies show that the amounts of homework do not suggest an edge over people who are not having to do homework. This evidence shows that teachers feel it will help students academically by giving them homework and increasing amounts and that it does not make difference in a student’s education whether or not you have homework. Another reason example of why homework is not worth it is there
By STEVE MCCLAIN says, “Students at my school are doing worse than ever on state assessment tests… Perhaps less electives are required in order for test scores to rise.” That is a false statement. Just because there would be less electives doesn’t mean that it will cause tests scores to go up tremendously, because if there are less electives it’ll give the students an excuse to mess around more because they are bored. If a student is the type who loves to talk, their favorite elective most likely takes their mind off talking. With less electives the student has nothing to do but not pay attention and talk, because they have a lot of unused
