Are people born evil or good? Some people believe that humans are born good but get tempted into sin. Some people believe that humans are born evil and stay that way. Some people wonder if there is an inner debate of the soul. Because everyone is different could we be born with different souls. Some people could be born with evil souls and some could be born with good souls and the reason we are always fighting with each other is because it’s evils opinion against goods opinion. Or are we all born with a nutreal soul and then decide to be either good or evil based on the type of enviroment they grew up in. In Man’s Nature Is Good and Man’s Nature Is Evil, Mencius and Hsun Tzu argue about the true meaning of human nature. Mencius believed that humans are inherently good and Hsun Tzu believed that humans are naturally evil. Is it possible humans can be both good and evil? When it comes to whether human nature is good or evil, most people will choose one or the other. However, can’t it be both? There are many different cases and it will never really come down to one explanation.

Through out history evil has been best depicted as the absence of goodness and goodness as the absence of evil. With goodness being comprehended as the direct opposite of evil. It is under speculation that maybe there can 't exist only one general meaning of good vs. evil. I trust this, in light of the fact that any one individual 's perception of good or evil is without a doubt directed by one 's social comprehension of certain qualities and ethics within their culture, i.e. the power of social conformity (Muncaster-Social Psychology Lecture, 2016). Yes, there can be cases of evil that is seen as malevolent all over the world but due to the ethnocentric component of the perception of cultural morals and values, one is unable to categorize another individual as evil or good based upon their own cultural understanding of this notion. As they have been socially and culturally influenced to believe contrary to the fact.

Throughout the years of human advancement people have suffered and lives have been stolen in the pursuit of personal gain. Although it does make me question if it is always for someone’s personal gain or if there are other factors that are involved. I believe good is intrinsic, while evil is extrinsic. Intrinsic means essential. Extrinsic means not part of the essential nature of someone or something. Everyone is born with a friendly soul but they have the ability to learn to become evil. Some people in life may seem along the lines of evil since they were born. The reason to that is, something in their life could've happened to them to make them that way or certain people, in general, make them like that. There is good in everyone sometimes you just have to look deep to see it.

John Gardner’s novel Grendel provides multiple philosophical outlooks demystifying the epic poem Beowulf’s antagonist. Grendel is a monster, however Gardner clearly asserts through multiple philosophies that not all monsters are inherently evil. Grendel proves not to be evil due to his belief in solipsism. Solipsism is manifested in Grendel’s recurring and crippling loneliness, his understanding of solipsism affecting others, and Gardner’s achievement in eliciting sympathy for Grendel.

Good and bad, two small words that have so much meaning. What makes people react the way they do? Are people born to be good or bad, or do they have any control over what they will become? Can personal experience impact a person’s values by changing their views on life? The truth is that all people are born with both, good and bad tendencies. Also, it is true that the environment people grow up and personal experiences can reinforce or shape their values for better. Rudolfo Anaya shows how this can occur in "A Celebration of Grandfathers". Louisa May Alcott also illustrates this process in her story, "Little Women." Anaya in "A Celebration of Grandfathers" and Amy in "Little Women,” show that personal experiences and the environment that people grow up definitely can shape their values for a lifetime.

“Human nature is neither demonic nor angelic”, a statement by Mark Passio, is an expression which I do not quite agree, because to me, it seems that man is inherently good. Generally, there are 3 schools of thought with regards to the nature of men. These includes humanity is essentially good; humanity is essentially bad; and humanity is neither essentially good nor bad. A young child might draw on the wall and believe that it is art, however the parent will stop the child and tell them that drawing on the wall is a bad thing to do. I think that good and evil is inherent in all of us, as humans, and has been within us since the beginning of our existence. It is impossible to know the exact origin of good and evil, but I suspect it was bestowed upon us by God as a way to test all of us with the concept of free will. The concept of free will gives each of us the right to choose between good and evil.
