Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the US, who led the country through a civil war with his intelligence, strong principles, and empathy once said, “Whatever you are, be a good one.” In every aspect of one’s life, one should strive to have a good heart and be a good person. So, to be a good leader, one must first be a good person. Good leaders put the needs of others before their own wants and needs. They see the value in others and recognize the contributions of others. Good leaders skillfully manage tense topics and situations. In Lord of the Flies, Ralph is the best leader because he is selfless, appreciative of others, and diplomatic.
The first good leadership quality Ralph possesses is selflessness, he prioritizes everyone’s safety and comfort over his own desires. Jack returns to the beach from hunting to see Ralph working on the shelters with only help from Simon. While arguing with Jack, Ralph shouts, ‘“But you like it!”...“While I-”’ (54). Ralph would love to do anything else. He’s envious of Jack, who enjoys what he does. He’s envious of everyone who just left their responsibilities to go play or hunt. But, Ralph doesn’t shrug off his responsibilities, he realizes that building the shelters is important to protecting the group against the elements and fear of the beastie. Ralph sacrifices his wants for the good of the group.

While Ralph is complaining to Jack about how people don’t help much he makes sure to mention that ‘“Simon, he helps”…“He’s done just as much as I have.”’ (54). Ralph’s able to appreciate Simon for the help he provides, even when later stating Simon is funny and weird. Simon is an outsider, and Ralph is angry with everyone, but still gives credit to Simon and recognizes the help Simon gave
Ralph establishes discipline, and order, and shows affection towards the other boys. Prioritizing the group's welfare, Jack is becoming more and more savage, thinks less of others, and thirsts for
Ralph displays characteristic of a good democratic leader, demonstrating initiative, courage, determination and responsibility which greatly helped the boys survive on the island. In the book Lord of the Flies, Ralph shows immense amounts of initiative and responsibility as the
Then the fact that Jack was leading a dictatorship. Also that Ralph’s style of leadership is better then Jack’s. There are various types of leaderships evident in Lord of the Flies, Ralph’s being a democratic leadership. Ralph felt that getting rescued was the most important thing on the island. We can see this with his persistence in always keeping
(Golding, 61) Ralph influenced many people to also have hope. Piggy and Simon (without Ralph) would have easily just gone with Jack and nothing would have happened. Jack wouldn’t (and didn’t) even have the intellect to connect fire with rescue without Ralph. Jack could care less about the fire, unless for cooking his meat of course. Ralph keep everyone on track as long as he could.
While everyone else was hunting, playing, and having fun Ralph and Simon were busy working on the shelters with no one else’s help. Even though no one really followed the rules, Ralph still tried to somewhat obey
Towards the beginning of the book, when they are discussing plans for survival, Ralph mentions, “If a ship comes near the island, they may not notice us. So we must make smoke on top of the mountain. We must make a fire.” This is one of the first things Ralph mentions after landing on the island which shows that rescue is the main thing on his mind. He thinks logically, strategically, and has his priorities straight, making him a more effective leader.
(page 25 Lotf) Ralph plans things ahead and show that he will take care of the group. He thinks of the rules and how they will stay stabilized with one another, or how or when they will meet up. Yet most importantly he thinks of how the group will be rescued.
Even the choir applauded (Golding, 22).” He also exercises his leadership skills right away, designating a group of boys to hunt for food. In addition, he expresses maturity as he puts Jack, his political rival, in charge of the hunters. A good leader puts individuals in a place where they will thrive the best, which is what Ralph does
As Ralph and Simon are working hard, Ralph, a hard-working and righteous leader, informed, “All day I’ve been working with Simon. No one else. They’re off bathing, or eating, or playing” (Golding, Lord 50). Simon could have joined the other boys that were having fun; nevertheless, Simon was kind to help Ralph build shelters. He stayed to assist Ralph because he cared for the welfare of the group.
After some time of bickering Ralph, “shouted against the noise ‘Which is better, law and rescue, or hunting and breaking things up?”(Golding 180). Ralph is trying to calm down himself and each and every other boy on the island at the time, but instead of trying to approach them calmly Ralph goes home making demands. Ralph's lack of thinking skills could would cost lives because of his incompetence. Instead of going to the almost savage boys and asking for the fire and keeping a level head, he goes to the savages asks for the fire, and then fights with them. If Ralph was more confident in his ability’s to defuse a situation without violence he could have saved
He cares for the whole group and not just himself. The text states, “We'll have to have hands up like school. I'll give the conch to the next person to speak” (Golding 33). Ralph is a responsible leader that makes the boys more civilized giving them a better chance of survival. Ralph is a true leader and wants to do the best he can to get himself and everyone one of the boys safely off the island and back home, even though he doesn't know any of the boys, he looks after them and cares about them.
Ralph’s traits of responsibility, maturity and effectiveness are extremely visible during this scene because he is taking all the
“Well, we won’t be painted,” said Ralph, “because we aren’t savages” (172). There are many great leaders all over the world. To be a great leader one must have certain qualities including, being courageous, being responsible, willing to take charge, having all priorities straight on the important things, have determination, and many more. In Lord of the Flies, Ralph shows all of these characteristics and a few more. Out of every boy on the island, Ralph would be the best choice as leader.
In the book “Lord Of The Flies” by William Golding Ralph is the better leader among the boys. Ralph tries to keep the island in check by setting rules. Ralph also makes decisions to help the boys get rescued from the island. Ralph cares most about the group's well-being making him the better leader. While the boys are on the island Ralph tries to keep the island in check by setting rules.
There were a few times Ralph was angry when Jack let the
