Is someone a hero they let other men die for them? Is someone a hero if they are only trying to save themselves? This does not make up a hero. In the Adventures of Ulysses starts with a crew full of men but as the story goes on more and more men die, at the end leaving Ulysses as the only survivor. If Ulysses were a real hero he would not let other people die for him. He killed many when he battled in Troy that just means that he is a good fighter, not that he is a hero. Ulysses is a good captain and warier but that does not make him a hero. When Ulysses started his sail home he had three ships with fifty men each. At the end of the story he was the only one left to go home. He let 150 men die while he was leading. The dictionary definition …show more content…
They believed that he started killing the crew on purpose. When a lot of the men started to die the crew was scared. Ulysses was not killing his men deliberately; he did not seem to care about their lives. As much as he cared about getting home himself. A hero would put other things about themselves behind others. They would care more about others then their personal gain. Ulysses did not do that. Ulysses was like a child who teased others. This got the crew in trouble multiple times. If he had not done that other would be alive as well. At the end of the story Ulysses fought off and killed others. The only reasoning for killing them was because they were other suitors for the lady that she wanted to marry. Ulysses was brave but he was not a hero. He was courageous but he was not noble. To be a hero the courageous acts have to be for more then just yourself. His courageous acts were selfish and for his own good. When Ulysses battled in Troy he killed many. This him fighting was not heroic; he was fighting for his own side. He was not killing for the greater well; he was killing just for his people. Someone that is a hero has to be a hero for others not just themselves. He fought and he killed, but he was not a hero. If Ulysses was a hero others would be alive instead of him. Or he would of done more to try and keep his 150 men alive. Ulysses fought for himself instead of fighting for others. Fighting for others is what makes a true
He donated lots of money to people and places and charities that needed it the most . This would be one reason why someone would think he is heroic. Many people would not really see this heroic because he was a wealthy man he had a lot more money than what he donated. Yes he did donate a good portion of his money but people
He trusted them, and they responded to him," (5). Simpson mentions Ulysses's miserable adventure at West point, being a lieutenant in the Mexican War, sudden resignation from the army in the year 1852, and his part in the Civil War. 2 Also, the author shows that even though Ulysses was so determined by failure, lack of confidence and depression managed to overcome it and became an icon. Ulysses
During his time in the Mexican-American War he had to lead troops into combat. Many people thought that Ulysses was brave for leading the troops into combat. He despised the war because he thought that if the Americans won, it would mainly be for the expansion of slavery. After four years he went back to marry Julia Dent. In six years Ulysses and Julia had four kids.
I believe Odysseus is not a hero because he let many people die. He also didn't save his men from the Cyclops “He couldn't save his people.” I personally think that he didn’t try to save them at all. Odysseus did not save his people in time. According to Homer, “ While he fought only to save his life, to bring his shipmates home.
Odysseus doesn’t deserve the title of a hero because he made bad decisions that affected his crew poorly, Athena did almost all of the work in getting him home, and he cheated on his wife multiple times throughout his journey home. My first reason why Odysseus does not deserve the title of a hero is because he made
Just like in the story of the cyclops, he put his men first to put them to safety. He isn't greedy and looks out for others. He did everything he could to ensure that they would all get off the island safely. Even if some of Odysseus's men were unlucky enough to get eaten, Odysseus still felt sorrow for them. A hero is one to care for others and not himself.
Even though some people may argue he is a hero because he had a good idea on how to win the war, also when Cyclops tried killing them Odysseus didn't say his name and stabbed him so they escaped. I maintain that he is not a hero because he wasn't loyal because he slept with Calypso and his men died.
He put everyone struggling for survival before his own. The next reason heroism is the central theme is because of his selflessness. He had no concern for himself, in fact he knew he was going to die. The last reason the main theme is heroism is because of nature versus man.
This is worth consideration because Odysseus doesn’t deserve to be a literary hero because of how he treated his men and others without respect, kindness, bravery, and he definitely did not put his life on the line to save others he put others lives’ on the line to save his
What Odysseus did in one situation should not depend on whether he is a hero, but rather should be based on what the outcome
Some think Odysseus is a hero for many reasons, mainly because he helps many people including his family and his crew. Even when terrible things happen to him and his crew he perseveres and continues on his journey home. Even though Odysseus and his men do bad things like eating the sun god’s cattle there still are many reasons why he is a hero. One reason to support my claim is that he saves his crew many times. One example is when they sailed by the Sirens.
The leadership and legacy of Ulysses S Grant Ulysses was born on April 27, 1822 and died on July 23, 1885. He was born in Point Pleasant, Ohio. Ulysses helped America win the Civil War and stop slavery. An interesting fact about Ulysses S. Grant was that his real name was Hiram Ulysses Grant. This war contributor was important to America because without him leading us in war it is possible that we would have lost the war which could cause us to still have slaves today.
Odysseus was a hero for fighting and ending the Trojan war. Odysseus was a hero for risking his life to fighting in the war and was a hero for saving his men and everyone back home. Odysseus was a hero for caring about people and protecting them. Odysseus was special because he was brave and risked his life for people. Odysseus was special for being very smart and coming up with good ideas.
Odysseus should be considered unheroic because he refused to listen to anyone's suggestions and kept putting his men in dangerous situations. For example, Odysseus’ men told him to take the cheese and lambs and leave but Odysseus told them,”Ah, how sound was that! Yet I refuse, I wished to see the caveman, what he had offer- no pretty sight, it turned out, for my friends” (Homer 5). This demonstrates unheroic behavior because they didn't know whether or not the cyclops would be nice but instead of putting safety first, Odysseus insisted on meeting the cyclops. He let his curiosity take over and stopped caring about what would happen to them.
