The Scientific Revolution was a time in history that has forever changed our world. According to a majority of scholars, the Scientific Revolution took place between 1500-1700 and was a time in which many scientists’ took questions in which the world had, had for centuries about the universe and how it operated and used new methods to come up with answers to these questions. This new age of Scientific Revolution began in Europe after a great period of cultural and intellectual flourishing from 1000-1500 (McKay, 556) .One name that jumped out to me when I was reading in the book about the Scientific Revolution was one that I am sure everyone thinks about when they think about this time, and that is Isaac Newton. Despite the many advancements made from these famous scholars, they still had not proven what forces controlled the planets and the objects on Earth. This question was the perfect opportunity for the man named Isaac Newton to use his determining personality to find the answer people had been searching for, for years. Newton’s first step was to prove the three laws of motion that had been studied by Galileo years later. One of the laws he eventually proved included the law that a body at rest tends to stay at rest; a body in motion tends to stay in motion unless compelled to change by an applied force (Louviere, 1). Newton’s second law that he proved was that acceleration is produced when a force acts on a mass; the greater the mass of the object being accelerated, the greater the amount of force needed to accelerate the object. This is a very meaningful quote by Mr. Newton and if I am interpreting it correctly then it really shows the great character the man had. Newton was certainly a giant in his own right, but he was paying respect to Galileo, Kepler, and Copernicus, in my opinion. He didn’t criticize Galileo for not finishing the formulation of the fundamental laws of motion; he acknowledged Galileo’s progress as a pioneer. He didn’t call Kepler idiotic for failing to show that the laws of planetary motion necessarily follow from an inverse-square gravitational force. He didn’t dismiss Copernicus for a fool, because Copernicus hung on to the theory of epicycles. Newton recognized that it was by the work of these great men who studied before him that he was eventually able to make his extraordinary discovery, which forever changed the world. Without their efforts, Newton would have never made his discovery and in this quote he was giving credit to the men before him for all of their years of hard work, in my opinion.
