Isaac Newton was born December, 25th 1642 in Lincolnshire, United Kingdom. The house he was born in, known as Woolsthorpe Manor, was small and included a kitchen, hall, parlor, and upstairs bedrooms. The house was surrounded by hundreds of acres of valleys, woods and springs, all of which Newton would later inherit. Newton was an only child, as his father, also named Isaac Newton died months before he was born. His father was a yeoman farmer, he looked after the estate and cared for tenants who lived in small cottages around the area. His mother, Hannah Ayscough, was more refined in aspirations, as in those times it was the males who would distinguish themselves. His grandmother made sure he was taken care of, he attended nearby classes, learned to read and write, and attended church weekly. His mother’s absence had a huge effect on young Newton. In 1653, Barnabas Smith died and his mother returned to Woolsthorpe Manor with three young children from her marriage to Smith. Isaac never forgave her for leaving him. When Isaac was 12 he was sent to the King’s School that accepted him for his abilities. He stayed with a local apothecary, William Clark, It is possible that Isaac became interested in Science while staying here. When Isaac was around 16 or 17, his mother removed him from school and put him to farming and managing family, but he did not fulfill his duties. So his Uncle William and the school master convinced his mother to allow him to continue with his schooling. He enrolled as a sizar (an undergraduate who receives maintenance aid from the college) at the University of Cambridge's Trinity College. It was at the University that he developed his interest in physics, mathematics, optics and astronomy. While at college Newton worked as a waiter and cleaner to help pay for his college studies.
