Isomaltulose is intended for use in conventional foods as a nutritive sweetener. The individual proposed food-uses and use-levels for isomaltulose in the European Union (EU) are summarized in Table 4.

New tooth friendly children’s drink concept attracts health-conscious mothers. Cargill Juice Beverage Application has developed a concept for healthier children’s’- drinks, including a sample called “Smile”. Smile has passed the plaque-pH telemetry test and is approved to carry the Happy Tooth Quality Mark. The drink has been scientifically tested at the University Dental Institute of Zürich. In more than 40 countries, the food status of isomaltulose™ has been confirmed by the authorities. It has been approved for use as novel food ingredient in Europe and Australia. In the U.S., isomaltulose™ has FDA (Food and Drug Administration) notified GRAS status. The Japanese government legislated for Foods for Specified Health Use (FOSHU) recommended isomaltulose as the functional components since 1991.
Future of Isomaltulose
Research and development of novel isomaltulose fortified products with physiologically functional properties is continued. The market for isomaltulose is already substantial and continues to expand gradually. However, some problems remain to be solved in the development of isomaltulose, as follows. The first problem to be solved is that there is a need to achieve continuous and efficient production of isomaltulose syrup and to maintain a low cost with high-purity. Second, isomaltulose with highly functional properties must be developed.
With increasing consumer health consciousness and also increasing awareness physiologically of functional foods, the future for products containing isomaltulose seems to be very encouraging.
