If I asked you who was an american hero, who would be the first person you think of? I would automatically think of Jackie Robinson. Jackie Robinson is not only an american hero but also a hero for all of sports. His courage, wanting to be the first african american to play baseball, fighting for equality, and fighting for his country are all reasons he should be considered a hero. But he did a lot more than that to be a hero like Abraham lincoln or Martin Luther King Jr.

Jackie Robinson had a tremendous amount of courage to do the things that he's known for. He grew up in a terrible time when segregation was still happening. So he had to stand up for himself and his wife at times. When he joined the army he had a lot of tough times that came with it. He was pushed around and made fun of when he first joined boot camp. He would gain respect when he made his way up to first lieutenant (Funk and wagnalls new world encyclopedia). He also had a white officer that disrespected him and his wife and he was sent to jail for assaulting an officer. When he was attending UCLA he played four sports. He excelled at baseball and football, but also played basketball and ran track. For a little while he played football for the Los Angeles Bulldogs in the Pacific Coast league (Literary reference center). But after returning from the war he joined the powerhouse Kansas City Monarchs of the negro leagues (Funk and wagnalls new world encyclopedia). Branch Rickey would see him play and have him sign a contract to play baseball with Brooklyn Dodgers (Funk and wagnalls new world encyclopedia). He would spend one year in the minors with the Montreal Royals before moving up to the major leagues. Jackie would play his whole major league career with the Dodgers.
