In the book Surviving Hitler a boy name Jack is a young boy living in a town named Gydnia in Poland. He lived there with his mom,dad and two siblings. They were a well off family and unlike many families, they had electrcity and running water. Jack had many friends and went to school just like every other kid. Thats when things all changed for him, he had to leave the town and go live with his grandpa in a small town far from Gydnia. His grandpas town was not ad fortunate as jack had been in his hometown and they didn’t have power or running water in the small house they shared with their grandparents. Boys age twelve do not work to support families and can’t even legally get a job. The living conditions are much different because every home now has electricity and running water and you rarely live in one small room with a whole family of multiple kids. You can also got paid much less and the working condiditons and labor was very hard especially when you are only twelve years of age. Jack had now been forced to work for over a year now and him and the other jews in his village were moved into a small, cramped area where there were to big families per one room. This area was called the ghettos were they would sit and wait to be seperated and the people who can work will be taken to work camps and the women and children who can’t work will be taken to death camps. Jack was sent to a working line and seperated from his family and he never knew that would be the last time he saw them. Though things such as the holocaust still happen in the third world countries today they are not as extreme or on as large of a scale. That is because of the holocaust our society and culture has changed upon learning of the wrong doings of the nazis. Since that period of history our world has become more accepting of those that are different from the normal person. We are also more connected to the rest of the world than we have ever been so people in other countries would know quicker if something like this is happening and stop
So he agrees to take some vacation time. He takes himself and his family on a vacation or family camp c called patterville Up north. Where families and people can pretend the world isn’t going to hell. There all happy going swimming, hiking going to the beach meeting new people. As he moved from one mill town to another he adds a new family members Alice and Anna. They moved to homestead where they worked in steel mill. The conflict between the labor unions and the steel mill company in Braddock lead to attempt to closing the mill. Even though he gets paid more than we used to, rents were high
After getting shot, Johnny’s dad returned home. He was in very critical condition and could only do simple tasks to help around the house. Pa takes this time to teach Johnny about the war and how to be the man of the house. Pa seemed to be getting better, until he died. Right before dying, Pa made Johnny promise to not go fight in the war.
When Jacoby’s father was first taken from his home by the Nazis, everything began to change. His father had no idea what was to come or why any of that was happening. The entire family worked and some had to work in worse or more dangerous working conditions than others. “‘ At the end of the week, he would carry home three dollars to his family, being his pay at the rate of five cents per hour just about his proper share of the total earnings of the million and three-quarters of children who are now engaged in earning their livings in the United States.’”(p.60). This quote shows how Stansislovas has to work in child labor to earn a living. Jurgis sprained his ankle during his job while he was working at the meat packing factory. Ona’s boss Phil Connor harassed and raped her against her own free will.
Mary told the narrator to come back, if he needed a place to rent. He later rents out a room in Mary’s house, since he cannot return to the Men’s House. One day, when the narrator was walking down the street while eating yam, he noticed an eviction of two old couples. The narrator felt sorry for the couples so he became angry, which made him give a speech. Brother Jack offers a job opportunity in the Brotherhood organization because of the inspirational speech he gave at the eviction of the old couples.
Jack is a single parent with two children and just lost his job. Now he doesn't have income and he has to feed himself, his children, and needs to pay his rent. To make it worse he is kicked out into the cold of winter with only his children's frozen hands to cling to. This could happen to anyone and some examples are in Angela's Ashes and The Street. The stories Angela's Ashes and The Street use characters, events, and setting to show that poverty forces people to work harder than usual.
In two weeks Hitler took over Poland, Jack’s father, knew that will be sent to a camp so Jack, his mother, brother and sister, went to live with his grandfather which took them twelve-hour. The Poverty-stricken area is filled with death and sickness. He describes it as a horrible place to have to live and work with starving orphans and many sick and dying people living in morbid conditions. The waste filled streets and fire prone buildings were just a regular thing for the people living under the poverty line. 2.) The story takes place in the slums of New York City.
As though no one roamed the streets and everyone was going through a tough time. The significance of location choice is a very big aspect in the story due to being a Jew in the time of WWII many had to immigrate to near countries and states, one being in the area of Israel. Choosing a different location would make the story different in many ways. As the story is of a young survivor of the Holocaust after WWII, so due to its background of the main character having the story set anywhere else that is not a place common for Jews to be in after WWII, it would just make the story a whole lot

This novel talks about the life in America during those times back in 1937 how many people struggled to live. Many people during those days lost their jobs. There was no welfare state or unemployment benefit. Disabled or old people had to depend on their families or charity and keep working for as long as they could. Everyone was so competitive in order to get a job.
Many people were left Impoverished, hungry and hopeless. In the story "Digging In", the narrator states how their family tried to survive with a minimal amount of money.
Later on in the book all of his family died but his uncle lived and found him in a camp that Yanek got moved to. The Holocaust was the darkest time in history, a time when the Jews faced legalized discrimination and inhumane treatment.
Yet, in the beginning of the novel, he quit drinking and seems to take control over his life. He seems to have the will to better himself and take care of his family. He sees his job on the Overlook, as a way of reconciliating with his family and to pursue his dream job, writing a play. Although it started of as a good idea, the Overlook eventually takes over Jack. On a more realistic kind of horror, Jack is a human that is struggling with himself.
