James Huberty was born on October 11, 1942 in Canton, Ohio. At the age of three James was diagnosed with polio, leaving him with permanent damage to his walking. Polio can be spread person to person and when it does, it will invade the brain and spinal cord leaving that person paralysed. In the early 1950’s James father had bought a farm in Pennsylvania Amish Country, but his mother refused to move there with them so she left them. As time went on and James was in his early adulthood life he had gain a likening of firearms and began using them. When James got old enough in 1962, he attended Malone College, getting his bachelor degree in sociology. James also attended Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science, receiving his license for embalming. …show more content…

However, James and Etna both did separate crimes. James threatened to shoot one dog, but did shoot a separate dog. Etna had insisted her daughter, Zelia, to physically assault one of her classmates. She had also threatened that classmate’s mother with a pistol. Both James and Etna were well known with the local police department. As time went on, James condition had gotten worse than Etna’s did. He believed that foreign bakers were bankingrupting the United States. As a result James became a survivalist and bought thousands of dollars of non-perishable food and six firearms as preparations. He then threaten to shoot a random civilian if he were to lost his job again. However, when he did lose his job, he almost committed suicide, but Etna stopped him from doing so. James was later involved in a motorcycle accident in September of 1983, leaving his right arm to twitch uncontrollably after lingering damage caused by his polio was messed with by the motorcycle incident. After the accident, James had to quit his job as a welder and the Huberty family packed up and moved to Tijuana, Mexico in January of 1984. Most people tried to avoid James because he would always be complaining or always be holding a grudge. He also constantly talked about war and how he was a “war criminal”, even though he never served in the Forces. Etna knew that something was wrong with James because he always acted sad and lonely. Etna had even told James to call a mental-health clinic, right before the day of the massacre. The next morning, James was in court for traffic offences, but the judge let him go with just a fine. Later that day, he took his family out to eat at McDonald’s, not the one he would soon shoot up, and then went to the San Diego zoo.
