When Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, Russia was ready to support them with their mobilization plans. During this time mobilization was considered an act of war. The Russian mobilization plans were based on a war against Germany and Austria-Hungary. So when the Czar ordered a partial mobilization of the Russian army against Austria-Hungary, they could not partially mobilize due to the plans. Czar Nicholas II ordered his army to continue with the full mobilization, even though he knew Germany would consider this as an act of war.
Jeremey Morlender was presumed dead after going to Soviet Russia, when in fact, he had defected to Russia’s greatness. After being attacked, Vivian Orton was revealed to having a secret identity in order to infiltrate Russia. Jack Kressling orchestrated a mass genocide of Soviet Leaders so that he could re-establish Russia’s former rulers to keep trade with them. Shaginian generated a representation of capitalist America as a place of deception and
Stalin and Napoleon both also tried to re-write history by controlling the media (or in Napoleon’s case, through Squealer’s propaganda), inserting themselves as victorious leaders and discrediting their rivals. Furthermore, both Napoleon and Stalin lived a luxurious lifestyle while their countries were going through
While the world was focused on battle in Europe, the Ottoman Empire began a systematic campaign to eliminate the Armenian people within its borders. Ottoman authorities created a propaganda campaign claiming that Armenians were a threat to national security, in part because of some Armenians’ support of Russia in the ongoing World War. Armenians were arrested, tortured, and killed. The women and girls were raped and some were kidnapped into a life of sexual servitude. The genocide ended in 1923 and Turkey’s new leader Mustafa Kemal and expelled all remaining Armenians.
How significant was control of the media in the achievement of communist political dominance in the years 1917-1941? A communist government assumed control of the USSR in 1917, following the Bolshevik Revolution. They consolidated their power through the Civil War of 1917-1921, and through several radical political, social and economic changes. Control of the media was significant to a large extent in advancing their control; it was used as a tool to suppress opponents’ views and thereby grant a large platform to spread their own.
• Germany, allied to Austria-Hungary by treaty, saw the Russian mobilization as an act of war against Austria-Hungary, and after scant warning declared war on Russia on August 1st. • France, obligated by treaty to Russia, found itself at war against Germany and, therefore, on Austria-Hungary following a German declaration on August 3rd. Germany was quick in invading Belgium so as to reach Paris by the shortest possible route. • Britain, allied to France declared war against Germany on August 4th. She had a different reason to enter the conflict: she was obligated to defend neutral Belgium because of a 75 year old
1) How did Joseph Stalin control Russia? As the leader of the Soviet Union, Joseph Stalin utilized totalitarianism, characterized as total centralized control over every aspect of public and private life. He achieved this form of government by means of control of the media, religious and ethnic persecution and police terror. To eliminate all information that held him in a negative light, and instead glorify his lead and support of his policies, Stalin controlled the media through censorship of the press, propaganda and indoctrination.
The 1953 coup d’état in Iran, was a joint CIA and US government operation to overthrow the Iranian prime minister, whom had nationalised the oil industry in order to control and benefit from the country’s own oil. They reappointed Mohammed Reza Shah, a puppet of the west, so the US could once again have absolute control and power over Iran. In return the Shah as unfeeling ruler, established extremes in Iranian society, including suppressing other political parties and severely oppressing his own people, in order to maintain his position and meet the demands of the American government. Whilst this aspect is portrayed in the opening historical setting of the film, it is not continuously reinforced, and the reasoning behind the coup d’état was not given. Thus it distorts the Iranian history and the CIA and US government’s immersion in influencing Iranian provocations.
The tide of war changed for the Soviets at the Battle of Stalingrad. At the battle, the Red Army defeated the Nazis and eventually drove them from Russia. Stalin would go on to attend the meetings of the Allied Powers, and would become a loyal ally. Stalin still planned to expand the Soviet Empire after the war. After the war, Stalin did not change that much as a leader.
Many believe that Napoleon represents Joseph Stalin (“Critical Essays The Russian Revolution”). Stalin was most known as taking control of Russia after the revolution and being a dictator over the Soviet Union. He also used his KGB agents to take out political rivals and spread fear throughout Russia and implemented Stalinism, which gave almost absolute power to the government and primarily himself (“Stalinism: Political Doctrine”). This Parallels to the actions of Napoleon and his pigs. Taking into account that Napoleon represents Stalin, and the fact that Stalin is considered a corrupt dictator, it is clear that Orwell was trying to create a character who represents a harsh tyrant only caring about protecting his
In the first Red Scare of 1919-1920, the government was reacting to the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917 and the heightened nationalism of World War 1. The government feared the communist movement gaining momentum in this country after the unrest of workers strikes in several
Imperialism was a big impact on the late 1800’s leading into the early 1900’s with counties like the British, Spanish, Russia, and Germany pushing to gain more land in different counties. This would lead to an arms race and the buildup which would lead into World War 1. Many different alliance were made if another country would attack another other countries would help with the fight. This would keep peace till the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria.
Bob Brecher’s argument is centered around being a counter-claim to Dershowitz’ Ticking Bomb scenario. The counter-claim argues that a ticking bomb scenario, as described by Dershowtiz, is unlikely to occur in the real world, due to the difficulty in apprehending a terrorist after the terrorist plot has been set in motion, but has not yet been fully executed. Even if the authorities are lucky enough to apprehend the suspect before the ticking bomb has been set to detonate, it is improbable that torture would result in the suspect revealing the plot before the bomb goes off. Brecher additionally argues that Dershowitz’ idea of using legalized torture warrants to limit torture would, on the contrary, lead to the abuse of the torture warrant system.
I found it interesting that NT Wright was clarifying the differences between God’s wrath and penal substitution with reform theologian Thomas Schreiner in this video. I was a little unsure, but this video affirmed my understanding that NT Wright was a unique blend of sweet and sour flavors enhanced by hot and spicy pepper that Thomas Schreiner was hot for him to take in. I agree with NT Wright argument the wrath of God. Why? Because Wright says that the cross was about much more than Jesus absolving us of sin.
The Bechdel rule tests film maker’s views on gender equality. “Bechdel Rule is a simple test which names the following three criteria: (1) it has to have at least two women in it, who (2) who talk to each other, about (3) something besides a man,” explains bechdeltest.com. I do not think this is an accurate way to judge if a film as a whole is feminist and agree with Holly Derr when she says that we need to actually sit down and watch the film to decide whether it is feminist. Holly Derr states, “A film may have some feminist elements, some sexist elements, and some elements that are neither, because—and this is important—"feminism" is not simply the absence of "sexism." Movies who pass the Bechdel test such as Nerve and the Divergent Series:
