On a rainy day, in the emergency room of Mercy Hospital in New York City, a twenty-five-year-old woman, named Jane, came in complaining of nausea, dizziness, and cramping. - A nurse, named Mary, walked into Jane’s exam room and asked “What brings you to the ER today Jane?” - Jane says, “Well, I was sexually assaulted about five weeks ago, and recently I have been feeling nauseous in the morning and dizzy, and I have had some abdominal cramping.” - Mary says “I am so sorry to hear about your assault. Ok, we are going to take this one step at a time. First, we are going to take some blood.” - Jane asks “Blood test? I was tested for AIDS and STD’s and that was all negative! Jane got off the bed and walked over to the window and started crying, after a couple of minutes she called her mom, Katie. - Jane told her mom that “I wish you were here with me, you would know what to say and do. I can’t believe that this lady is trying to enforce her holier than thou Christian values on me. This is my life and my choice not hers! I expected her to understand where I am coming from. She is a woman, what if this were her? She is supposed to be on my side!” Katie told her she would be right there, and twenty minutes later, Jane, Katie, and Mary were all in Jane’s room. - Katie was very mad and frustrated and said, “I understand that you have been trying to encourage my daughter into keeping a baby that she doesn’t want!” - Mary looked at Katie and said “I was just trying to help her to understand that she has options regardless if how the fetus was conceived, that a baby is a life with a beating heart, and she needs to be certain that if she terminates her pregnancy that she does not regret it
