The most famous tourism destination in Japan is Kinkaku-ji or the Temple of the Golden Pavilion. The pavilion was a retirement villa and built in the late 14th century for the Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. A monk infatuated with the pavilion and burnt down the pavilion in 1950.
