Cassius Clay (Muhammad Ali) was born in Louisville, Kentucky on January 17, 1942 in a time of harsh racial segregation. While growing up, his parents could barely support their family of four. His father worked as a painter, painting billboards and signs. Cassius Clay Sr. had had his dreams crushed, and in result, resorted to drinking. Clay had said that his father caused his family a great deal of pain.
The books Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe and The Stranger by Albert Camus both have differences and things in common. The book Things Fall Apart is about a wealthy man named okonkwo who is determined to reach the highest rake because he wants to be nothing like his dad. Okonkwo became very successful with a family and over that time he runs into many problems from war, punishments, missionaries, and even being kicked out of his clan for 7 years. In the end Okonkwo was driven to killing himself losing all the things he worked so hard for. In the book The Stranger Meursault’s mother just died at for some odd reason he didn’t cry or feel sad at the funeral.
Elie is scared when he says, “My father just received several blows across the face for asking where the restroom was”(39). Once Schlomo (Elie’s Father) received several blows across the face, he overcame that obstacle by working hard the next few hours until bedtime came. He was scarred both mentally and physically by this occurrence. He did not let this roadblock, or obstacle, stop him. It’s a good example when Elie says, “It’s over, God is no longer with us, but the march continued to go on”(76).
The journey this family faced was excruciating, and painful. Tom braddock, a.k.a the cinderella Man was on the path to becoming the most famous boxer ever seen until the Great Depression came around, he watched his dreams crumble around. Tom, and his wife and kids did their best to overcome the hard times. But, yet always believing in each other. The main character in Flowers For Algernon is a 37 year old man named Charlie Gordon who has down syndrome and whose “friends” made fun of him all the time. In both of the stories, the main characters go through hard times; like Noah having to travel from Texas, the place he grew up in, to Colorado. That's true with Alfred from,The Extraordinary Adventures of Alfred Kropp. He had some rough times in his life. He had to overcome watching his uncle Farrell get killed right in front of him and he was his only living relative which, also ties in with Alfred having to go to a new house and meeting new people which was hard for him. Then after his relative died he started to become friend with a guy named Bennacio which lasted a little bit till the enemy who stole the sword Alfred was sworn to protect to killed Bennacio, that hurt him
This part of his life, however, is dampened by sorrow and abandonment. For instance, his oldest brother, Hugh, who he fought alongside with, died of a heatstroke. In 1781, smallpox made an appearance into the scattered battles and massacres. Because of this disease, Jackson’s other brother, Robert, and his mother died. This made Andrew Jackson an orphan at the tender age of 15; it also hardened him as an individual.
Throughout the novel “ Black boy ”Richard Wright uses short dialogue to describes tense and fearful moments in his childhood. He was starting to implement his 5 year plans, started winning battles in world war two, and was doing many other extraordinary things which that set him apart from all other historical figures (which I will get into shortly). George W. Nye Trevor J. pierce George Nye was a loving husband and hard worker, he also came back from a civil war that tour the nation apart looking like a skeloten. He was a mechanic and was a prisoner of war. He was sick for 6 months. During this time he watched his brothers die, while he somehow survived, day after day, month after month, and yet he survived. When he got home he could not maintain his work because he was to weak.
In comparison, The Things They Carried and The Battle of Ong Thanh video had several alike features such as youthfulness, unfamiliar surroundings, and the fear of dying. For example, in the video soldiers would talk about their experience and feeling towards it. As said in The Things They Carried, “In June of 1968, a month after graduation from Macalester College, I was drafted to fight a war I hated. I was twenty-one years old” (38). These men were scared, untrained, and no longer hopeful for the future.
