Judith Jamison is a famous ballet dancer and a choreographer. She had also been in the movie “A tribute to Alvin Ailey” and wrote the book “Dancing spirit”. She had achieved many things in life and had many major awards. I had chosen Jamison because she has gone so far from where she has started when she was six. Also because she continues to inspire me and many other people.
She attended at the University of Miami but sadly couldn’t finish all four years because she didn’t have the financial support for higher education. She is best known for being a Cuban-born journalist, actress, television host, and also for motivating many Hispanic women. The article, “40 Latinas Who Have Changed the World!,” states, “...Cristina inspired and motivated for decades with her self-titled hit Univision show.” She is a role model for many Hispanic women in Florida. According to “Time Magazine,” she is one of the top 25 influential Hispanics in the US.
Alicia Keys is a singer-songwriter, actress, and producer, born Alicia Augello Cook in New York, 1981. Born an only child, Alicia Keys parents Divorced when she was two years old, after which she was brought up by her mother, Teresa Augello in a one-bedroomed apartment in "Hell’s Kitchen" neighborhood in Manhattan. At the time this was no place to raise a child, it was a boiling pot for the negative, a place where prostitution, drugs and gang violence strived. Despite all the struggles her mom was persistent in wanting her daughter to succeed and did all she could for her to progress. As we celebrate Black American History month this is a time to reflect on contributions made by many African Americans. One person that comes to mind is Barbara Jordan. Barbara Jordan was important because she had an impact on the African American community by being the first African American in the Texas Senate, a Civil Rights leader, a speaker for the Democratic National Convention, and she will always be remembered for her role in the Nixon impeachment. Jordan had many other accomplishments and she worked for the good of others until her death at the young age of 59.
In 1973 Jordan had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. It made her ability to move around hard. She eventually was unable to walk long distances and stairs and had to sit in a wheelchair to get around. Due to her declining health, in 1979, she retired from active politics. She became a professor of law at the University of Texas in Austin and many of her students later became politicians and public officials. In 1980 she wrote a book called “A Self Portrait.” It had a brief summary of her careers and life. In 1991, she became an advisor for Ann Richards who was the Texas Governor at that time.
