In the western novel Peace Like A River, author Leif Enger creates a faith-filled character with a heart of gold who readers come to know as Jeremiah Land. Jeremiah Land is a single father of three kids: Davy, Reuben, and Swede. It is obvious to see that God is at the forefront of Jeremiah's life, along with his family. However, Jeremiah's faith is tested when his oldest son Davy shoots two kids execution style and kills them in his own home (Enger 49-50). Throughout the novel, readers are able to get a better insight into Jeremiah's life, including figuring out his strengths and weaknesses, learning why his wife left him, and are left questioning why he decides to perform a miracle and heal his ungrateful employer.

It is hard to find a downfall in Jeremiah's character considering all of the great qualities he possesses. Because of his deeply rooted faith, he tends to give people the benefit of the doubt. Some may see this as a strength, or some may see it as a weakness. For example, Martin Andreeson was seen as an enemy to the Land family, and as someone who was "out to get Davy." Towards the end of the story, Jeremiah Land decided that he deserved to know the truth about Davy and his whereabouts (Enger. "'Look, Reuben. I want the same thing as you: Davy free and clear. If you like Mr. Andreeson better as an enemy, then keep him one. Maybe that's your job as a boy—as a brother. My job is different'" (Enger 246). Another person that Jeremiah gave the benefit of the doubt to was his employer, Mr. Holgren. Even after Holgren fired Jeremiah and was very disrespectful towards him, he chose to perform a miracle on him that gave him a new face (Enger 78-80).
It is hard to believe that with as spiritual and kind hearted as Jeremiah Land is, his wife would choose to leave him. Jeremiah's wife, Helen, and him did not quite see eye to eye on things. He chose to follow his calling from God and resort back to a simplistic lifestyle after a traumatic experience, and she felt as if his relationship with the Lord came in too much conflict with their marriage. Eventually she left and remarried, leaving Jeremiah on

Holgren goes back to the idea that he tends to give people the benefit of the doubt. Holgren, the grotesque superintendent that happened to be Jeremiah's cruel employer, was blessed with a new face and healed by a miracle Jeremiah performed on him, although he did not deserve it in the slightest. "Then I saw that his bedeviled complexion—that face set always at a rolling boil—had changed" (Enger 80). Jeremiah put all anger and hatred towards Holgren aside and acted out of love and forgiveness instead. This is something Jesus would do, and there is a blatant connection between Jeremiah and Jesus Christ; Jeremiah parallels him. Jeremiah's faith is so strong that it guides his actions, and along with that comes the fact that he is a good person at

1. Fredrick Douglass witnessed harsh and violent actions throughout his slave life, as slave owners utilized Christianity as a justification for these actions and for the system of slavery. Douglass experienced this religious abuse throughout his life as a slave. However, in 1832, when he began working for Captain Auld, he witnessed the misuse of religion in the setting of a violent action. After Auld whipped a young woman, he justified his actions by quoting the Bible: “He that knoweth his master’s will, and doeth it not, shall be beaten with many strips” (33).
The greed of money has overtaken Freeman and he has no sense of compassion or being
“Courage is the commitment to begin without any guarantee of success.” This quote by Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe is a great representation of the acts of courage in the book ‘Peace Like a River’ by Leif Enger. In my book, Jeremiah and Davy both show acts of courage throughout the book. These are all very important acts of courage in the book and without them, the book would have been completely different.
However, somewhat ironically, the character who is perhaps the most standout Christ figure in the novel is Jewel, who in his only chapter questions the existence of God. Although Jewel doesn’t seem like the ideal Christ figure because of the way he speaks and the actions he takes, William Faulkner
First, in Unwind, Shusterman uses character archetypes to uniquely show how Lev has changed as a person after being betrayed by his mentors. In the beginning of the novel, the author chooses to portray Lev as an innocent character archetype. All his life Lev was naive and was brainwashed by his parents and pastor into believing that being a tithe was a good thing, and that the only way he could prove himself with god was by sacrificing himself. “ Lev knew he was a tithe from the time he was little…’you’re special,’ his parents had always told him. ‘Your life will be to serve god, and mankind.’ ”
Alabama Moon is about a boy named Moon Blake (dubbed Alabama Moon by the general public), a recently orphaned boy. For his whole life, he and his father have lived together in the forest, away from the government. Now he's ten years old, with only what his father taught him and told him to do: 1. How to survive in the wilderness without having to rely on others, 2. Run away from the law (for him, the other way of saying “government”), 3.
In the beginning he would always pray and believe God was good. As the story goes on and he faces many hardships his beliefs get shaken up, but in the end he emerges with his faith
Where was he right now? Jeremiah felt a lack of distance from his dad. He found out that Lois Ann and his father had a thing going on. On page 99 it says “He didn’t know that Lois Ann and his father had a thing going on, a heavy thing that would eventually break the family apart”. This shows that Jeremiah is not happy with his family and is very distant from them.
People tend to be judged by how others perceive them to be, rather than how they actually are. This statement is shown in the play, Inherit the Wind by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee. One example from the play in which this type of unfair judgement is displayed is when the news of Henry Drummond being the defense attorney for Bert Cates was announced. “Henry Drummond, the agnostic… A vicious, godless man… Henry Drummond is an agent of darkness.
Douglass questions the existence of any God because of religious slaveholders, beginning to have a lack of a belief in God due to the slavery system as a whole, as many other slaves had too. This subtle break in of humanism due to slavery properly illustrates just how beliefs start to fall apart, and focus more on attaining freedom before heavenly affinity. This theme of humanism continues into their childhood, whereas Douglass is taught by white boys how to read. This shows the original intent of children, “The plan which I adopted, and the one by which I was most successful, was that of making friends of all the little white boys whom I met in the street. As many of these as I could, I converted into teachers.
“The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell is a story about a man, Sanger Rainsford, whose ideals and overall character change throughout the story, specifically about hunting, due to his encounter with General Zaroff. At the beginning of the story Rainsford is a stuck up man. He could not care less about any other living things other than humans. He believes all living wildlife are expendable and only there for his pleasure of hunting. During the story Rainsford has to make many quick and overall difficult decisions during his encounters with the ocean, General Zaroff, and the island wilderness to survive, that change how he thinks about animals.
One of the first words children learn to say is “daddy.” This is one of the earliest signs that fathers play extremely large and important roles in their children’s lives. Part of the father’s role that can make or break the relationship with his child is the expression of fatherly love. Reuben Land of Peace like a River receives a constant stream of affection from his dad Jeremiah. In fact, the righteous Jeremiah Land is a near-perfect example of pure, fatherly love and even more so an example of God’s love for His children.
