Penn State football was once the pride of Pennsylvania. The Sandusky scandal changed all of that forever. The University had to learn many lessons. According to Layden, T. (2014), one of the biggest issues that caused the scandal to strive was the fact that those in charge probably felt the football program was too big to fail. In other words, they felt the success of the program was so important to the University and its fans that the scandal needed to be kept on a low profile. Those decisions harmed the University and more importantly changed the lives of several young boys forever. Jerry Sandusky is in prison now, and head coach Joe Paterno died a few months after he was fired from his coaching position. The football program will
My personal opinion on whether or not Joe Paterno should have been fired, have everything taken away from him, including all of his wins and the statute in front of the stadium taken down. Despite the fact, I do not think that Joe should have been fired at all. He did what he was supposed to do, and reported the incident to the next higher upper. Although, could he had done more, of course he could have. Paterno even stated in the film when talking to the bibliographer “I wished I had done more”.
During the Penn State child rape scandal, Jerry Sandusky had been accused of having sexual relations by force with athletes at the college. Further documentation shows that Sandusky had not only one sexual relations with a student; but with “10 boys in a period of 15 years. “(Huffington Post) The classification of crimes that Jerry Sandusky committed is legally defined as “mala in se.” During the first apparent observation of abuse occurring at the school, Michael McQueary, a former assistant coach for Penn State, reported the descry to Joe Paterno; whom then reported the accusation to school officials.
Later, Briles recruited two of the players after they had already been kicked off the football team. There was evidence that Briles along with other members of the program let the teammates rape girls. They never disciplined, never told anyone, but the word got out. When a female athlete came up to Briles and mentioned that she had been raped by one of the football players Briles chose not to tell any of the higher-ups and to just let it go. The girl didn’t want to report it to the police so she only told Briles and her coach about the situation.
Here, the penalties to Penn State were meant to punish, and in doing so, many innocent stakeholders also suffered. The sanction included: The football program is from any postseason games for four years, starting with the 2012 season. Next was the cut scholarships back the beginning of 2013. How, coach Paterno’s punishment the NCAA remove the past 14 years of his victories which was 409 off the book that total of 111 from his first record. However, this punishment relies on the information issued by former FBI director Louis Freeh and two association at his law firm, also known as the Freeh Report (Maher et al.,
Collectively, they publicly sought to deny the existence of a crisis looming at Penn State concerning various allegations levied against Jerry Sandusky. While their true motives for denying allegations in the decade leading up to the crisis may never be known, it is apparent their strategy and actions played a crucial role in what now is unequivocally regarded as a ‘cover-up’ by Penn State University officials. Employment of this strategy was evident in the manner in which Paterno, Spainer, Curley and Schultz ultimately addressed allegations of Sandusky sexually assaulting a young boy on Penn State property in early 2002 – nearly a decade before the crisis erupted in the national
There are many influential items that were brought up during the trial that the judge used to impose his sentence. After a jury found him guilty of over 45 separate charges the sentencing process began, the judge made a statement regarding Jerry Sandusky's status in the community and the fact that he was able to become a predator without anyone knowing and was able to keep it covered up for so long (Bohm & Haley, 2014). The judge continued by also making sure that Sandusky knew the sentencing was being based on the facts brought up in court and that they are true beyond a reasonable doubt (Daily News, 2012). He also must consider the fact the way Sandusky not only committed these crimes but the way it occurred, such as how he abused the trust of the victims who at first had trusted him. These crimes that were committed were not committed against strangers and the judge makes a comment that just that fact makes this a whole lot worse than if it were actually being committed against a stranger (Daily News, 2012).
The Freeh report showed several officials of the university knew about the allegations of Sandusky’s behavior as early as 1998. The report indicated president Spanier, vice president Schultz, athletic director Curley and head football coach Paterno knew of Sandusky’s actions and failed to report them to the proper authorities. Even though Paterno reported the allegations to the president, Paterno failed to move past the president and report to the Pennsylvania police or the Board of Trustees. Freeh declared most senior leaders at Penn State showed a disregard for the welfare of Sandusky’s child victims for at least 14 years empowered Jerry Sandusky to continue his sexual child abuse (Gessler,
PROS: The pros of the Louisville scandal were very hard to identify. Being that the scandal was very much the hot topic and caused more bad than good, there are not many pros of this scandal. One pro that I found while reading up on the Louisville Scandal was that it brought the team, school and also the coaches many opportunities of fame and attention. During this time of attention, there was a book published called ‘breaking cardinal rules: Basketball and the Escort Queen.’
Now Tyler the Penn State student told us more about Joe Paterno and how he felt when he was fired and how the school reacted. He mentioned he felt devastated he stated “I don’t think this was unwarranted. You know, this man was treated so badly”. (Happy Valley 28:17) Then there was the General Attorney, which told us about the case and what was going on and what was happening with the trial.
In addition, the staff that once led the team to many victories was now no more and had to be replaced. This affected human resources as well. Paterno, Curley, and Sandusky are now gone and human resources not only have to process their departure appropriately, but also recruit and fulfill their positions with confidence that they are making the appropriate
Jerry Sandusky was the assistant football coach for Penn State University for a period of 30 years (Crandall, Parnell, & Spillan, 2013). He was highly respected by his peers and the community. Additionally, Sandusky founded The Second Mile organization to offer support and help to underprivileged youth. What is more sickening and completely obliterates any good name Sandusky made for himself over his long career is the fact he sexually abused young boys. Sadly, Graham Spanier (President), Gary Schultz (V.P.-Finance and Business), Timothy Curley, and Coach Joe Paterno of Penn State failed to protect additional victims by knowingly concealed the child predator’s actions from “the Board of Trustees, the University community, and authorities”
Most of all he supplied attention to the youth that were underprivileged and didn't have fathers that were involved in the child's life(O'Neill, 2012). While the incidences came out at trial of particular assaults that occurred at the Penn State facility I am shocked based on testimony from the victims that more people in Jerry Sanduskys circle of friends and coworkers didn't break their silence earlier based on the repeated encounters discussed in these circles. This shows the power of manipulation that Jerry Sandusky even carried over other professionals at Penn State University as well as the children that he
Jerry Sandusky joined the coaching staff in 1969 and retired in 1999. However, after his retirement, he continued to have access to the Penn State campus athletic facilities. This crisis that involved Sandusky was one of the worst in the history of college sports. In addition, the scandal also produced the harshest penalties by the National Collegiate Athletic Association. The crisis began with two events that happened over ten years ago.
The Jerry Sandusky trial began in 2012 and was held in Centre County, Pennsylvania. Sandusky was found guilty on 45 of 48 counts and sentenced to 30 to 60 years in jail (Curry, 2015). The details of the case are horrific in nature, and worse is five men were made aware of the incidents and no action was taken to alert authorities. During the trial the victims were led through questions that all pointed toward the trust they had in Sandusky. The university is located in a small town setting where people work hard and have little; Sandusky reaching out to someone was considered a big deal.
Already, the system of college athletics is corrupt. People see that all this money is being made and the college athletes are completely getting
