"Jesse" Analytical Essay The Short story "Jesse" was published by Joy Boothe in 2012 on the date of Martin Luther King 's birthday, as an honoring of what he dedicated his life towards. The author wrote the story as a fic-tional text, but somewhat accurately depicts some of the difficulties in society in terms of racial dis-crimination towards African-American. The story has a chronological order; however, its structure is unique from many other stories, as it jumps from periods of the main character’s life, with several years in between. The story covers in total twenty-two years of her life starting as a child ending as an adult. It is written from a 1st person point of view and is written in past tense making it seem like the main character is looking back into her upbringing. Throughout this l essay I will focus on the analyzing the setting as it will be impactful on the story, as well as the theme and its and message of the story. The main character is an unnamed girl who hates the name Jesse because of the reminders of her alcoholic uncle who committed suicide. Upbringing has a large impact on the story and sometimes is overlooked or underestimated; I on the contrary believe it is the plot of the short story to depict the upbringing of narrator. As stated earlier the girl’s upbringing surrounding a black man affected her point of view towards racism. When the narrator is an adult she is views Jesse as the black man, who she was very fond of, instead of her alco-holic uncle also named Jesse. It is important to mention that it is also the influence from the father, that makes the narrator who she is. His acceptance towards Jesse shown through “At lunchtime, Dad-dy takes two heaping plates of collards and cornbread and says he will eat on the back steps with Jes-se”.
