As of 2017, there are about 26,000,000 People in the world that follow the Jewish religion(Gruber) The Jewish religion is a very traditional culture with many unique characteristics. 26,000,000 is a very big number but for a religion that is relatively small. Many Jewish people have struggled throughout the past century because of war and oppression, but they still keep their traditions. The Jewish culture is Traditional, unfair in some ways and overall very different from American culture as seen in “Son from America”. In the book there are many parts where it shows how Jews can be very easy going and don’t ask for much. While Samuel keeps sending Berlcha and Berl money, they just keep storing it under there bed. This is because they are very happy with what they have so they don’t use the money. “One is not allowed to touch money on the Sabbath, but I will show you.”( Erdrich165) It wasn’t just Berl who has this mentality, its most people in the village. After the 40 years Sam was gone, nothing changed in Lentshin. “one could see only the contours of the roofs and the candles on the windows. Samuel said, “Nothing has changed here” (Erdrich164). There is also a bad side to being very traditional. Women are disrespected greatly in “Son from America” and Sam notices this right away. When Sam gets back his mother and his father greet him. After a little bit of talking to his mother, she goes right back to preparing the Sabbath. Sam asks to help his mother, which is a very polite thing to do; however Berl laughs at Sam thinking that Sam is joking. Sam’s mom’s name is Berlcha but that isn’t her original name.
