This case is most known for legally establishing the law in the United States the “separate but equal” doctrine, also known as segregation. The separate but equal doctrine has been engrained in the segregated South during the Jim Crow era. The infamous decision in Plessy v. Ferguson did not only physically separate whites and blacks, but public facilities, including school systems, buses, water fountains, lunch counters, restrooms, movie theaters, and courtrooms. Also, the United States Army could be segregated. Even though the decision was related to segregation of African American students, people of other races were being routinely segregated in many parts of the country.
American society hardly changed socially after the Civil War, with the majority of the U.S. population holding incredibly racist views on black Americans, not specifically limited to the South. Dr. king talk about a lot of hardships during this speech. The way that Dr. king showed the African Americans is by discrimination, racism and not getting any rights. For example Dr. king talks about a "Promissory note" which were suppose to give every person human rights but made them suffer more. Another example is "One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination" quoted by Dr. king. This shows that even after the "Promissory note" which is the declaration of independence they were stuck in this same place and being treated different because of their color.
Life in the Southern part of the United States during the late 1950’s was a time of great conflict. Blacks and Whites did not see eye to eye. John Howard Griffin makes an effort to document these times by portraying himself as a black man in South. Negroes, as they were called at the time, were treated very differently from the white population. He quickly found this out.
The medical division of the Freedmen’s Bureau provided hospitals and doctors for newly freed people but their racist ideologies followed them, “... many Bureau physicians seemed to harbor beliefs that black people were inherently inferior and susceptible to certain illnesses…”(19). The medical professionals that were meant to aid emancipated slaves took a bias approach that made them incapable of actually helping them. These beliefs continued and the wide spread disease and illness that plagued newly freed slaves led some to believe that African Americans were ill-equipped to handle freedom (Roberts 633 of 4234). Despite the inaccuracy of this belief, it goes to show how the ideology of the United States was not prepared for the emancipation of slaves. Throughout the history of the United States, many derogatory and hurtful terms have been created to refer to individuals or a collective group of minority people with the goal of undermining them. Some examples of these words are ‘Nigger’, ‘Faggot’, ‘Beaner’ among countless other harmful labels. These terms are problematic, as they dehumanize the race in which they target, as reminders of the oppression experienced by these groups, giving the terms power. Among these hateful words, ‘nigger’ remains the oldest term and is the most racially charged and hurtful to the minority group that it intends to harm which are blacks. The documentary Black in Latin America Haiti and the Dominican Republic: The Roots of Division talks about the same issues as the article The Dominican Republic 's mass Haitian deportation reflects its racist history. In the Dominican Republic, most residents are in denial of being black while in Haiti their black ancestry is embraced. The film says, at around 14:57, that once Dominicans were freed from Haitian rule that they rejected Haitian culture. They no longer wanted anything to do with Haitians, as they believed they were different. This anti-Haitian belief was even taught in schools until the 1960’s.

The task of this assignment was first of all to explain the relationship between the colored and the white races in the Southern States of America from 1900 to the 1960’s. To investigate this, I used different kinds of literature and a few sources of history. Through these materials it was clear that this relationship between the colored and the white races was unequal and the colored race was discriminated by the whites.
