The general objective of this research is to find out the overall factors that impact or yield higher level of job satisfaction and identify the most satisfying and least fulfilling factors.
4.2 Specific Objectives:
The specific objectives of this research work are:
 To determine the level of influence of work environment on employee job
Satisfaction in South Africa.
 To identify the role of pay on employee job satisfaction in South Africa.
 To examine the degree of impact of fairness (Employment Equity and Affirmative Action processes) on employee job satisfaction in this country.

Research method
7.1. Literature review
The Hawthorne studies/effect are one of the biggest studies on job satisfaction to have been previously conducted. This study was conducted by Elton Mayo from the Harvard Business School to find out about the various conditions that affect the worker’s productivity. The Hawthorne effects provide concrete evidence of the fact that people work for purposes other than payment and these studies gave way for other researchers to conduct studies on job satisfaction (Macefield, 2007).
Scientific management studies conducted by Frederick Taylor also have a huge impact in studying job satisfaction. These studies contributed to a change in industrial production viewpoints, which resulted in a shift from skilled labour and piecework towards the more modern approach of assembly lines and hourly wages. Therefore, industries greatly increased productivity because workers were forced to work at a faster pace. Respondents taking part in this study listed reasons for job dissatisfaction such as the lack for opportunity growth, being underpaid, no opportunity for career advancement and feeling trapped. Anonymous (2011) found that in South Africa, only 41% of all respondents report that they are satisfied with their jobs but none of them are looking for a new job. Additionally, 29% of both sexes said work-life balance is the most essential factor in their career.
