Alvar Nunez Cabeza De Vaca survived by using the resources he had in order to thrive through the many difficulties he faced. He was very resourceful and helped others along the way. Ways he survived was using materials he found and also things he hunted, another way was he was a great communicator, and also he could heal injuries. Cabeza was a very clever and sharp-witted man who went through many catastrophes, but found his way through each and everyone.

In 1855, after hearing about the Mariposa Battalion’s expedition of Yosemite Valley, a man named James Hutchings hired two Native American guides to take him to this magnificent place. Upon his return, he published his experience in newspapers as a “luxurious scenic banqueting”. He began to publish the Hutchings’ California Magazine and became the most reliable voice in regards to Yosemite. The issues of his magazine, which comprised of a total of 60 issues, helped to make Yosemite extremely famous. Hutchings and his wife obtained the Upper Hotel in Yosemite, which he had visited on one of his travels, and renamed it the Hutchings House.

Another heroic civilian was George Walters, a dockyard worker who used a rolling crane positioned alongside the battleship USS Pennsylvania. When the yard was fired at during the beginning of the raid, he valiantly moved his crane back and forth on its track, effectively blocking Pennsylvania from low flying dive-bombers and fighters. Gunners on the Pennsylvania considered the dockworker a nuisance at first, but they soon realized that his 50-foot-high cab gave him an excellent view of incoming zeros. Using the movements of the crane arm, they were able to return fire against the enemy. Walters continued his maneuvers until a Japanese bomb exploded on the dock and sent him to the hospital with a concussion.
