“Virtuous Arguments” Reading Response Through John Duffy’s written works, he stated that Rush Limbaugh’s sexist comments were insults towards the Georgetown University law student Sandra Fluke. John Duffy describes in a well-written manner how critical it is to have knowledge in having an opinion towards a certain topic and commenting about it in a structured format. John Duffy states that rhetoric has taken a turn into a negative path to where people do not care about what they say anymore to the public. John Duffy suggested that Rush Limbaugh was being sexist towards Sandra Fluke on public radio. We should be respectful of other people’s beliefs and or values, because if we have dissimilar opinions we need to be cautious in verbalizing those thoughts so that we do not offend others.
Through the analysis of the numerous arguments that we have read throughout the course, I have learned how to effectively catch logical fallacies in arguments. Although the use of appeals was a review from high school, I had trouble telling the difference and distinguishing which appeal was which. I have learned how to differentiate and distinguish emotional from rational rom ethical appeals in literary works. I was able to apply what I’ve learned to the presidential debates, which shed light on the candidates’ arguments. I learned that using fallacies can be dangerous, especially in an important event.
At the end of act three Juliet found out Romeo was banned from Verona and she was grief stricken. Her parents then went back to the marriage to Paris,yet Juliet didn't love Paris, she was already engaged with Romeo. Juliet took the matters in her own hands and made it worse by going to friar Lawrence to seek advice. As Juliet talked to the Friar he gave her advice to drink a potion that he had made that will make her into a deathlike state that lasted for about two days, the instructions that he told Juliet was to go home and take the potion, parents or her nurse will notice and put her in their family tomb,finally when she awakes she will run off to Romeo and live happily. Juliet was worried for this idea and began to think over this process “How if, when I am laid into the tomb, I wake before the time Romeo come to redeem me?...” she started to show
(Q) How could the leaders of the Puritans look at this case and think that their religion or their lifestyle is healthy for the people? Winthrop 's ideology is basically telling the people that no matter what good deeds you do it 'll never be good enough for God. On the other hand this guilt is basically what built America. Why else would the Puritans be working so hard to make a functional city (besides the Queen 's authority and the promise of freedom of religion) they thought that they were the "chosen ones" by God and that the city upon a hill was the promise land. But was it worth all the constant fear and anxiety that they would be burning in a pit of flames? And what would America be like without this guilt?

Working at the factory provides Lyddie with a great deal of money, more than she has ever got before. If Lyddie had not gone to the factory she would have no money left. Before Lyddie worked at the factory she had a different job. She was a house maid and got paid little to no income at all, then when she went to the factory all of that changed. “ The pay reflected her proficiency, she was making almost $2.50 a week…” ( page 86 ). Lyddie was very poor when she was a maid due to no earnings therefore she needed the money. When she went to the factory her wages went up tremendously compared to what they used to be. Society’s values influence people to construct their personal mores around them, and those who do not are not accepted by society. In our society, those who have well-paying careers are valued above those who do not. So when McCandless decided against following the path society expects him to, his parents were upset. “Chris informed his parents that he had no intention of going to college. When Walt and Billie suggested that he needed a college degree to attain a fulfilling career, Chris answered that careers were demeaning ‘twentieth-century inventions,’ more of a liability than an asset, and that he would do fine without one, thank you” (114). The haughty tone with which he ends the sentence shows his confidence in his decision to live how he wants to live rather than how society expects him to. His parents, who McCandless sees as conformists, want him go to college so he can have a career that is “fulfilling”, which to society seems mean wealth. Furthermore, Winston always believed that a person should always fight for what is right, and that is what he did. With Winston leading his country against Germany, he led with an attitude of bravery and confidence, similar to how the British were feeling at that time. For example, Winston Churchill gave one of his most iconic speeches on the special day of June 4, 1940, where he used his words to inspire people to stand up for the Allies. As a politician he even gave a speech to Parliament and told them he had, “nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat.” (history.com) He was showing that he himself was ready to fight as well. In spite of this, they do not necessarily agree on what the most important issue is with education. Nonetheless, it all boils down to this: our educational system is flawed and it must be examined and re-evaluated by teachers and administration in order to best serve our democratic arrangement; it is necessary that the argumentative culture be disbanded and that we focus on creating opportunities for students to flourish through a civic education. Arguments happen everyday in history and now a days. Weather the arguments come from speeches, debates, body language, or even a paper; they contribute to everyday life. These arguments can happen by audio or visual rhetorics which help to strengthen the argument and its purpose. Both Daniel H. Cohen and FDR use great rhetorics in their speeches, ethos and pathos, while keeping in mind the audiences they are speaking to. These two men both had a purpose in their speeches, weather it to argue the importance and ways of argument winning, or the future of the country.
Jonathan Edwards version of God was very aggressive and unforgiving. Insult after continuing insult, this does not seem like the Jesus Christ with the wonderful forgiving spirit. With the words, “God hates you,” repeated multiple times throughout the sermon, it is truly hypocritical that the God described as forgiving and loving of all would say “I hate you,” every five minutes. I personally feel like this is not the way God would like to be described, and that God would much rather liked to be showed as a forging and gentle spirit.
In “Re-Composing Space: Composition’s Rhetorical Geography,” Roberta Brinkley and Marissa Smith expose the how valid modern day rhetoric is by analyzing the work of professionals who specialize in the following: history, English, and human behavior. According to the authors, in ancient Greece only educated, white, non-slave, men were the only group whose opinion was considered; anyone’s opinion who did not meet that criteria did not matter.
