John Edward Robinson was born on December 27, 1943 in Cicero, Illinois. He was the third of five children; his father was an alcoholic and he had a disciplinary mother. His childhood was relatively normal, when he was fourteen he became an Eagle Scout. In 1957, he was enrolled in an all-boys private school for aspiring priests at Quigley Preparatory Seminary in Chicago.
